 Hi guy's would love some expert advice regarding my security setup as i'm not too sure iv'e got it quite right. I just got my first pc Feb, so i,m still finding my feet but would appreciate some guidance. I assume layered protection is advisable(although iv'e been informed by friends i may have too much)! At the present i have Norton Internet Security 2005(licensed until May2007),Spybot(teatimer disabled),Adaware,SpywareBlaster,SpywareDoctor,RegistryMechanic,A-squared(free),i have also disabled my windows firewall for conflicts with Norton. I did enable the Onguard setting on my RegMechanic and am having no probs. My scans are always clean(apart from a little hiccup, when i downloaded without reading the EULA, but all is well again). If you feel i could indeed improve or make changes with my pc security setup i would be very grateful for some expert advice:D . as an added bonus i always use regularly Trendmicro,Bitdefender,McAfee and PandaActive online scans (all clean also). Please be gentle:) i'm only little!

PS i'm using Windows XP(home), IE7 which iv'e tightened up also

    Hi

For me I would say your doing fine with what you have, it seems to keep you clean from malware and thats the main thing, while many dont like Norton as it has a tendancy to suck up PC resources it works for you at present but if you feel like a change once the licence runs out in May 07, we can suggest some free alternatives that do just as well, without the overheads to CPU and Memory.

Maybe some think running all those online scans could be excessive, my feeling is if they work for you and your malware free, then your doing the right thing... I bet many of your friends who tell you these things are the ones that get infected?

I give you what I run and have installed as a comparison and I have never ( oh I'm tempting fate now ) had malware in the many years I been on the net,

    Avast Free ( antivirus )
Zone Alarm Free ( Firewall )
    Spywareblaster
Ad-Aware SE Free ( malware scanner on demand )
Windows Defender free ( live/resident malware scanner )
A-Squared Free ( malware scanner on demand )

I may do the odd online scan with Bitdefender but thats rare and most of all keeping windows upto date will all updates.

I do however like the latest AVG Antispyware application and I may change Ad-Aware to that as a backup malware scanner to Avast and A-Squared.

Thats my security software, maybe the other guys have their take on what they do too for you :)

    :D Hello Halo

Millymolly sends a huge hug for your sound advice. I was pleased to hear you say that you think i am doing fine at present, since Feb, i can honestly say that iv'e only had the one little glitch but i do know that it's early days and that i'll not always be so lucky. I suppose when your new to the world of cyberspace friends all have their own take on what's best for you, although i do have a friend who states that in the 6 years he has been using his pc that he has never, ever, been infected with spyware etc, but between you and me (i think he.s telling porky pies:)!!! ) I was indeed considering changing my Norton after the license runs out ,as being a true Scot i feel i ought to hang on to my coppers and i will give lots of consideration to your list of installations,it does seem to work well for you. I also installed Eulalyser(as this is were i got caught out!! not checking the EULA before i downloaded) and i have McAfee SiteAdvisor(although i did check on this before i downloaded the little intruder, but the site was given the ok!) however i do appreciate that these things are only to assist and that at the end of the day it basically comes down to us if we trust to download. MillyM. is very grateful for your help and being relatively new to this game i can assure you i need all the help i can get:)

    Have a Dram on me
    XXX TaTa the noo!
