I'm not sure where exactly to post this query, so please feel free to move it to the correct section, but I'd be most grateful if someone can solve this (little) problem for me?

My son has just revamped my computer - an Acer with Windows 7 - as it was beginning to run slow and have small but annoying hiccups, so he spent some time reformatting and reloading all my data - so generally my system is running well again.

However, there is one small rather annoying feature - and he's tried to sort it out, but to no avail. When restarting/rebooting before, this process was executed in almost record time, but now it takes at LEAST 3 minutes - sometimes longer - the moment the screen comes up black with ACER, etc, across it, this is where the holdup occurs. The other day I timed it 4½ minutes before the black screen finally changed to green before continuing the restarting process and closing it.

Probably a stupid question - but then, I'm no expert, so this comes from a total ignoramus in this field - would all the approximately 140 updates required and executed, have anything to do with this? If so, can something be done, or will I just have to grin and bear it and wait for it to do its own thing?

    Thanks in anticipation.

Explain the screen again. It is black with Acer info on it and stays that way for a couple of minutes and then what is on the green screen?

For reference the norm is a BIOS/Manufacturer's splash screen that usually lasts several seconds then a quick flash of a blank screen (1 sec.) and then a Windows is starting logo (10 sec.) then quick blank screen (1 sec.) then Windows welcome screen or desktop.

If the hold up is during the Acer screen that usually indicates the computer is trying to identify hardware. Does it do the same wit no USB devices attached?

This is where I usually prescibe Winpatrol to check and stop or delay start up prorams. Seems like your son could probably handle this nicely. http://majorgeeks.com/WinPatrol_d3380.html Sorry to jump in sach2,but it's just a thought.

Sach2, thanks for your speedy reply - so here is what happens when I need to restart, particularly after I've downloaded updates and am told to restart my machine. So I click on 'restart' and the green screen comes up,
saying "shutting down." Then the screen goes black with the following in white lettering: "Acer, Empowering people" across it, and down in the bottom lefthand corner: "Del: Enter Setup" and "F12: Boot menu."

After about 3+ minutes the screen then changes to green (Not a solid green - sort of broken with lines, etc), with the word "Welcome" and then the normal desktop with various features follows.

Don't know whether this info is of any help whatsoever?

And Nick T - also thanks to you - I'll show my son this WinPatrol and let him follow up on it.

Hey, what would we ignoramuses do without you good people always there to help out with good advice and tips?

    Grateful thanks!!

If it is stuck on the in the bottom lefthand corner: "Del: Enter Setup" and "F12: Boot menu." screen then it would seem to be hanging before Windows starts. This usually means the computer is trying to identify hardware.

Try it with no USB devices plugged in and see if it gets through that screen more quickly. Make sure you don't have a CD in the tray as well.

You might also have your son go ahead and hit DEL to enter Setup (during that screen) and then go ahead and hit ESC to exit and choose the option to "Save Changes and Exit" when given various choices. (He isn't really changing anything except to tell it to save what ever it found during the 3 minute wait period which might speed things up.)

Sach2 & Nick T, many thanks for your replies to my query. Passed them both on to Son and whether he used them or not, I wouldn't know, as I went out and by the time I got back my machine was running beautifully again without any hiccups. However, what he did is beyond my knowledge - as I walked in, he just said: "Ok, Mom, all sorted out..." and continued concentrating on the website he's building for a client without elaborating on what he found on my machine, or did to it.

So once again, many, many thanks!
