I am getting a new Dell PC with following Configuration.

I am going to use a 46 inch OR 55 inch TV as my monitor so I can do regular computing as well as use it
    as a Home Theater PC.

    Intel i-7 3.4 GHz Processor

    12 GB DDR3 RAM

    Windows -7 Ultimate

    Integrated 7.1 Channel audio

    Hauppauge® WinTV-HVR-1200 Hybrid Analog/Digital TV Tuner

They are giving 1GB NVIDIA® GeForce® GT420 as default video card.

    And they want almost $ 100.00 Extra for 1GB ATI® Radeon™ HD5770 Graphics Card

Should I pay extra for Radeon HD 5770 ? If yes, What will it do that NVIDIA won't ?

    Thank You.

I have a normal Hp Pavillion. I slapped a Radeon in it and it kicks *** now! I mean, I can run bioshock 2 at full setting with no lag! This is NOT a gaming rig by any means. so yeah, I would :)

I think it is a rip off to pay an extra $100 for a card that sells at around $120 so i would stick with the GT420 which is not only newer technology but will do the job very easily, it is ready blueray and 3D so i don't think you can go wrong with it.

    Hi there.

Do dell have an option to chose one of the new Sandy Bridge cpu's? If so it might be worth chosing one of those as they outperform the current i7's. But if all you are doing is browsing the net and watching movies etc then you don't really need an i7, why not save some cash and get an i5 with 8gb ram?

Regarding the video card, do you have any other options to chose from? That GT 420 should be ok for what you want to use it for but there may be quieter alternatives.

Regarding other options, rather than the 5770, a 6850 could be worth thinking about.... A bit more recent, and a bit more oomph... but it is more expensive (not too much if you find the right model).

Then again the 5770 runs pretty quiet, which could be a consideration for a HTPC (there's a review of Sapphire's 5770 <snip>, where it gets recommended, one of the reasons being that it has "barely audible levels of noise").

Otherwise Sandy Bridge might be a good option, as Burrell pointed out.
