Could someone please help me with my malware problem? I've followed the steps in your removal guide but I'm still having problems. Internet explorer keeps changing back to allow all cookies every time I close it, and I'm still getting a lot of pop up windows every time I open my browser. I was getting constant advertisements for bogus spyware removal programs but that seems to have stopped after running the counterspy scan. I think my computer's still infected with something though. I've included all my logs from the scans. You should also know that I was unable to boot up in safe mode as the guide instructed. Any advice what to do next?

The Panda scan log was too big to attach so I had to split it into three files. I hope that doesn't cause a problem.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Yes that's because you are allowing this C:\Program Files\Support.com junk to run on your PC and it is just collecting cookies an other unnecessary garabage and wasting diskspace.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Uninstall the CounterSpy trial program now since we are finished with it.
    Uninstall the below software:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
Web Savings from Ebates <-- should have been uninstalled in step 0 of the READ ME

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

    Download this file - combofix.exe
    1. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    2. When finished, it will produce a log ( C:\combofix.txt ) for you. Attach this log to your next reply See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Under Main choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. Avenger
    2. ComboFix
    3. GetRunKey
    4. ShowNew
    5. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Thank you very much for your help. I followed all your instructions, but I ran into some problems. The constant popups stating that my computer is infected and that I need to download rogue spyware removal software started coming again. This seemed to be fixed when I first ran counterspy but apparently it wasn't. Also, the icons for Online Security Guide and Live Safety Center reappeared. TrendMicro keeps catching and quarantining files but it doesn't seem to be helping. I'm including the requested logs and hopefully you can help me fix this, even if it means backtracking.

That's okay! Sometimes it takes a little repetition to get everything removed. Malware has a knack for spreading or mutating in between the time you post your logs and the time you get my fix to run. This can be caused by powerdowns and startups. Try to avoid shutting down or rebooting your PC after posting your logs.

Continue by downloading a tool we will need

    - Process Explorer

Extract it to its own folder somewhere that you will be able to locate it later.

Make sure you have rebooted in Normal Mode (do not open any other processes)

Make sure that one and only one Internet Explorer browser is opened up

    - Run Process Explorer

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of any of the below DLL files (if found) and then click the kill button.
    ptwrwjla.dll
After you have killed all instances of any of the above DLLs under winlogon click ok.
(If you do not find these DLLS, just continue on.)

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of any of the below DLL files (if found) and then click the kill button.
    ptwrwjla.dll

After you have killed all instances of any of the above DLLs under Explorer click ok.
(If you do not find these DLLS, just continue on.)

Next double click on iexplore.exe and again click once on each instance of any of the below DLL files (if found) and then click the kill button.
    ptwrwjla.dll

After you have killed all instances of any of the above DLLs under iexplore click ok.
(If you do not find these DLLS, just continue on.)

    Now just exit Process Explorer.

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {8435D970-75B1-42F5-BEAC-47DD479D9149} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmkhf.dll (file missing)

Thanks a lot for your help. Everything seems to be running fine now. Does everything look ok in the logs? I noticed a new bho line in the hijackthis log that wasn't there before. Let me know if there's anything else I should do.

It's not a good idea to be installing other software while trying to fix malware problems. It makes all the new stuff in your logs difficult to deal with and could lead to us deleting things you need. You installed a few new items since your previous posts and that BHO file you mentioned could be related to them. I have no way of knowing.

The below are two things I quickly saw that were new:
    B's Recorder GOLD Library
    Ulead Burning Helper

I would say that if your system is running fine that we should ignore the new BHO file since the rest of your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, C:\combofix.txt and C:\ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt logs that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
