Before you go, see if you can get into Safe Mode and try a System Restore.

 

It looks like the only way that's happening is if I can find some one who can help me use the emergency start disc.

 

Rebooting and tapping F8 doesnt get you into Safe Mode?

 

I'll try it & let you know, but probably tomorrow. I've got a long work day tomorrow, that starts a little earlier than usual.

Couldn't get into safe mode. Keep getting the invalid disc message.
A friend is going to call to help me soon, maybe even tomorrow. Will post again when I've made some progress.

All you need to do is do a reinstall over your current install. Do not format and everything will be the same. If you format you will lose everything.

 

OK, the new drive is working (it waspretty easy)and the reinstall (not reformatting as you cautioned) is in progress. Will get back when it's done. Thanks!

 

Just received an error message:
An error has occurred. A file was not found (error#2). Set-up could not finish opening a file on the source disk 'C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS\hpzimn12.dll' Destination file C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS\hpzimn12.dll=hpzimn12.dll

It is also saying it can be found on a disc labeled "hp cd". All I have are the recovery discs (3) and the Works Money disc.

Is this important? It's giving the option to continue without the file.

 

I've never used restore disc so I'm not sure what to tell you. I've always used an OEM or Retail copy.

Boot from the CD and see if this works

Type in D:\ and press enter

Type in cd win9x and press enter

Type in setup /ie /is and press enter

Let me know how things work out.

 

How bizarre... in order to boot from cd I had to end the recovery process. When I clicked cancel it automatically went through the startup even though all the files had not been copied. So the good news is that it's working, but I'm not sure what's missing.

 

Two questions:
Since the recovery is incomplete, if I started again would it only recover what's there now or might it recover the missing bits?

Since main programs are in their original forms (and the McAfee is not intact) how do I update safely?

 

Like I've said before I know nothing about Restore Disc as I have never used one.

After the recovery process I have no working antivirus so I'll need to go online to reinstall and update, but the system will be unprotected when I do this.

 

It will be fine until you get something installed.
