PLEASE Help hp pavilion ze5170

my laptop was running very slow and I had a lot of stuff on it so I thought to back everything up and run the system recovery cd's

it took all the cd's and rebooted and the windows xp splash screen appeared and now i get an error message stating can not continue unable to update registry contact your manufacturer to fix problem and they want $99 to talk to me

I also tried a reformat and install xp home from scratch i have the media and the system just shuts down after it reboots please help
