I have an HP Pavillion zv5000 laptop with XP home edition and I do not have any idea where my sound has gone. The control panel shows no audio device, no playback device, no recording device, yet when I go to hardware it says "SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio" "Working Properly". I have been to HP for the ADI 1981B AudioDriver for Windows 2000/XP download and to Soundmax for downloads with no success.
I have also run AdAware that found 21 problems and I believe it took care of them. I also downloaded Uniblue Registry Booster(free edition) and it fixed 15 of a few hundred problems or errors. I had another regisrty free download that I since have uninstalled that reported some 1052 problems or errors.

Short of tossing this laptop and seeing how fast it can go down the interstate on my way home, CAN ANYONE HELP ME???
    Thanks

It sounds like a software issue ...not a malware issue.

Do you have a recovery partition? YOu could boot into that and do a non-destructive repair.

And then maybe stop using registry programs.
