I am kinda new to this whole fix your own pc thing. I tried to install my dsl package sbc global and it messed up my pc.when i rebooted to like it said i got a blue screen that told me windows is shut down for saftey. I went into safe mode logged in as administrator . It was telling me I have a system conflict within the device manager. I went into the hardware section and went into it and foude some of the drop downs had doubled things in them.I tells me i have 2 processors two display adapters two ide ata contollers. Is this what is messing up my pc when i try t oinstall ? Can i get rid of these doubles or leave them and are they slowing up my pc at al or should i just leave it be. I need help bad and Dell seems to be no help at all seeing i get india when i call . They seem to be clueless ??? Any idea how to fix this ?

Did you install any hardware at the time like an Ethernet card etc?

No I just plugged in the dsl unit hooked up the filters and plugged in the usb cable . I then ran the start up disc and when it restarted i got slammed ..... I am kinda super concerned now about those doubled things in hardware to. I am afraid to retry hooking up this dsl now because I dont want to have another issue like this  n

    That is really strange.

Do you have System Restore as an option?

If not, try starting in Safe Mode, go to Add/Remove in Control Panel and see if the DSL modem driver is listed there and uninstall, reboot and then check Device Manager again for the double listings.

Also uninstall any software installed from the DSL CD such as ISP programs etc.

If the modem driver is not listed in Add/Remove, look for it in Device Manager and uninstall the modem from there.

Were you instructed to hook up the hardware before you installed the software? Everything I have worked with that concerns connectivity requires you to do it the other way around

I did the system restore and have my pc back the way it was before. All the sbc software is off the machine so i can boot up as i did before. I am just really puzzled as to why this happened ? Everyone i know just put the disc in let it rip and was up and running. My pc is brand new about 2 weeks old so it cant be anything that is to messed up. When i look at hthe book step one just says put hte cd in your pc. it shows everything hooked up except the usb cable. then it goes on from that point. i think my problem was i hooked everything up then ran the disc. I wonder if that is what messed it up ?? I hope i did not do damage to my pc now. Now how should i do this the next time. The sbc pc tech told me the doubled hardware in my device manager is not a good thing but he told me he could not advise me to fix it. dell had to but they will not answer my questions about it. I am so flustrated right now im going to have a freakin stroke ....

What I think happened is that it has installed the modem incorrectly with the incorrect drivers, and that has somehow screwed your hardware details in Device Manager.

The correct procedure for a USB DSL modem installation is to run the ISP or modem driver CD first (some ISP's give you one CD that installs the driver and their software), then hook up the modem via USB and then turn it on.

Windows will then find new hardware and install the correct drivers for it.

Only do this after you have removed any remnants of the prior botched installation, and just to be safe manually create a restore point.

Highly doubt you hurt anything :) , I would also agree with insomniac about manually creating restore point  Always good to be "safe", anyway, good luck!

Great. I guess I should have really payed super attention when reading the book !! At least I did no harm to the unit. I will try that. I will leave the doubled things in the hardware device manager if it affects nothing. The guy from sbc made it sound like it was really bad and would slow up my system because it reads i have 2 processors and all that stuff. I have taken everything off that pertained to the dsl from my add remove menu so it must be clean .... Thanks for the help. The guy on the phone i delt with did nothing for me....

You can probably get rid of those doubles if you know how to manage your registry :)

What items/hardware are doubled as you say?

In the Device Manager do you see any Yellow ! marks if so what are they?

If your system is an Intel CPU with Hyperthreading you will see 2 processors.. this is normal and the guy from SBC need a big whack across the head

No nothing is in yellow .The doubles are display adapters, ide ata/atapi controllers, processors , and universal controllers. I ran my system suite program that works really well and everything comes back good so the guy from Dell must be nuts. Thank god !!! I have a dell dimension 4700 intel pentium 4 with 512 mb split ddr ram. I thank all of you for the help !!!! My buddy told me about this site that someone helped him with a virus he had and they told him how to fix it. He :D goes nuts for this site. I think i do to now !! I would guess everything is in order from what you tell me so i wont sweat it .....

jerry would your Device manager list look similar to this of mine?

Bare in mind I dont have an Intel HT CPU ( which shows as 2 CPUs ) or MY Graphics Card doesnt show as dual monitor but you get the drift....

also is everything working as it should? if so hey looks like your fine... just make sure you read up in out spyware section on how to protect yourself against Spyware & Virii/Trojans so we dont see you in that section soon ;)

one way to double check if you have an Intel HT CPU is to hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and under Performance you will see 2 CPU graphs.

No I dont have it looking like that. I will try a screen shot so you can see . My display adapters 2 , ide ata /atapi 2, processors 2 , and serial bus are doubled also. I tried my install again and it goes into safe mode when i reboot ? I think I have to have someone come over to look at this thing ?? I really want this dsl ......
I will try a screen shot now .....

I cant get it in here ? I tried alt print screnn but i cant paste it. I can tell you mine doent look like yours . Under processors it actully says intel pentium 4 processors 2 times exactly the same and for display adapters intel r express chip set family . I am so lost now ??

Jerry88, if you look at additional options while posting you will see attach files, upload your screen shot using that.

I want to thank you guys for the help but i have my problem resolved. Sometimes when you get twisted you dont think. I had my dsl hooked up wrong more or less and i didnt know i did not need thier startup disk. My buddy who works in IT was in stiches when he came over to look at my pc. All i needed to do was to just hook up the dsl line and go right into internet explorer. I though i needed thier disc to run the line . DUHHHHHHH ...... That is what kept making my system crash , thier start up disc for thier browsers and that roten blue usb cord !!! I guess i needed the yellow port cord. Everything the book said to hook it up was wrong . He said the double stuff in my device manager is ok and to just leave it be before i cause a huge problem. Thanks for the help !! I am now up and on DSL .....

I'm glad you got it sorted and posted back.

Just to clarify a few things, as far as I know if you use a USB connected modem with XP then you need to install drivers, be they supplied with the modem or on the ISP's CD.

Ethernet connected modems on the other hand don't require any "extra" drivers.

As far as the double entries, I would have to agree, leave them alone, at least for now.
