    Hello everyone.
I have kind of gotten my self into a little pintch. I am extremely not with all this computer stuff as in the drivers and such. Ok... I uninstalled windows Xp on my PC. I then after reinstalled with the Windows Xp CD. After I reinstalled windows xp my computer won't show any network or Lan connection in the network sharing. I am running through a cable modem from (comcast) straigh to my computer. I don't know what I should do to fix this problem if any has any input please help. I do have another computer with internet if anything needs to be downloaded and transfered.

    Thanks Guys!!!

    welcome to majorgeeks!

as for your problem, there are a couple of things....

in your control panel, choose System, and choose the hardware tab, and click the device manager button, a window should open up with any hardware installed, look for one called network adapters and either double click it to open, or click the + next to it, and reply what's listed....also, are there any listings with a ? or ! in front of them, maybe under one called other devices? you may need to install a driver for your network card to work....

if none of those scenarios are awry, you can run the network setup wizard located under start/programs/accessories/communications run the wizard and choose "this computer connects directly to the internet...:"
the wizard is also located in your control panel
you might have to select other on the first page of the wizard to get to the one you need, connects directly to the internet.

oh and also, unplug and plug in the power to your cable modem, never know, but wouldn't want to miss that small chance that it could be the problem

Alright I went and look at the device manager. there isn't a "tab" anywhere with network on it. there is a few that have a yellow question mark by them.... it says other devices: Video conroller (VGA compatible), Ethernet controller, Multimedia Audio controller, PCI Simple Communications controller, and Sm Bus Controller. These all have a Yellow question mark by them and also have a yellow "!".

It says on the front of the computer AMD Athlon processor Xp... I'm nor sure if this will help you out or not. God I hope so!!!

This may help also.... It is running on an ethernet connection. Through a cable modem. (I also did try to unplug the modem for a about a minute then waited a couple and tried again... No luck)

Is there anywhere I may be able to find the make and model number somewhere else on the computer?

you will need to download everest free edition, and run it on that computer, do you have a way to get files to and from that computer? usb thumbdrive or something?

    you can get everest here:
    http://majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

install it and there will be an option to run a wizard, select hardware only and save it as a text file, then upload it with your next post...it should tell us what we need to know about your computer...

btw, is your computer store bought? (i.e. gateway, compaq, hp, etc) or was it build by someone or a store?

whats happening is that windows doesnt have the proper drivers to install your hardware, the ones with the ? in front of them....it runs obviously, but your not able to use those things:

vga controller is your video card, the proper drivers enable things like 3d and smoother animations.
Ethernet controller is your network card, and not having any drivers installed is why you cant get online.
Multimedia Audio controller is your sound card, and you probably aren't getting any sounds other than beeps coming from inside the computer.
PCI Simple Communications controller is most likely your modem (which you prolly don't even use
Sm Bus Controller is something that will get installed once we figure out what motherboard you have...

i'm not 100% sure on the way or where it was purchased. It wasn't mine until a month ago it was my fathers. so I can save this program to like a "cruzer sandisk"? then take it and load it onto the other computer?

it would probably be easier to attach the whole text file
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=86880

here is the page for your motherboard, i would download the lan driver first so you can install it and get your internet working, then do the others...if you need any other assistance, let me know.

    http://www.giga-byte.com/Support/Motherboard/Driver_Model.aspx?ProductID=1661

you will need to upload that text file so we can find out what video card you have...as it is not an onboard one, but something separate

also, you can install the chipset drivers located on that site and the sound drivers..once you do those, check to see if those items in your hardware list go away, and which ones still remain

Hey. I don't know how to attach all the files from Everest. i was transfering the downloaded programs from this computer to the "messed up computer" via a burnt disk. If you could please assist me in how to transfer them to this computer to post them. Please.

    Thanks

when you run the report wizard it gives you an option to open it as a text file, once that happens, save it and move it to the computer with internet and follow these steps to attach it to your post http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=86880

should only be 1 text file

on second thought, if you are using cd's for the transferring....i would hate to see you waste it on one text file...so lets go back to earlier.. were you able to run the software that you downloaded? did you reboot the computer after? (even if it didn't say so)

tell me what the device manager now says under other, and if theres a section for network...

Here is the scoop.... I tried to download the program for the drivers from that web site from the CD that I burnt. It says that it can not download. Everything on my "network" still has a question mark and a explmation mark by the ethernet. I'm so frusterated with it all. :cry

you may have to copy the .exe file from the cd to your desktop or something and then run it.
