Hello, i have been a user of windows xp for many years now but this
is thef irst problem i have had. I tryed to turn my computer on today and it
went to the checking disk screen it checked the disks but at the end this
message came up, "error in writing the output log", then it would take me to a page with the options for safe mode, start windows normally etc. When i clicked one of these options it would take me all back to ht beginning and repeat disk check etc. Whats the problem? What can i do to fix it? I left the computer on all night and it has done it for 14 hours now. I cant access anything. Please help.

Boot to the XP CD and log in to the Recovery Console. Then run chkdsk /r.

@help22...please do not start duplicate threads in other forums for the same issue. I have deleted your other thread. If it is decided your issue would be better handled in a forum other than software someone will let you know and you can proceed from there.

    Thank you:)

Not sure I would start to do a chkdsk /r when the drive have started to fail like that. I would buy a new HDD and perform a clean install, and then attach the old HDD and try to recover as many files as possible while the old HDD is still kicking.

  7. Nah it could just be a filesystem error snakefoot does not nessecerially mean that the hd is conking out. I have had an hd die and when i loaded windows into the new hd was able to access the old hd as a secondary and get all my files off the old hd before wiping and destroying it. Lets try the scandisk first though to rule out a simple file system error. Now, I think the system recovery disk is what you want cause it will load a (whatever your manufacturer is) flavored version of a windows xp install disk. Run it from the recovery console and if that disk is not the right one try the others until you find one. Just hit and miss and there are not that many so it should not take long.
    good luck!

Same thing happened to me - my HD was just starting to get cooked - put in a new one and setup fine - slaved the old HD to recover files no problem - you need a new drive

As mentioned before, it may just be a filesystem error. Sure would be a shame to tell someone to go spend money if it wasn't needed.

If the chkdsk /r is too risky, then do a chkdsk /p. It will tell you if errors exist, and if they are unrecoverable, without attempting a repair of the filesystem.

However, you need an XP CD. The XP boot disks will not do the job.
