Please Help - Mode not Supported

When booting my computer, 3 splash screens are supposed to be shown: 1. asus MB splash screen. 2. norton GoBack 3. Windows XP.

However, since getting a MAG 17" LCD, those splash screens are not shown. Instead, the screen shows "Mode not supported" until the XP welcome screen - then it goes to normal display.

My refresh rate is within my monitor's range (75). I have an ATI all-in-wonder 7500, but I don't think that is interfering because those drivers aren't loaded at startup, and it would seem like I would still have the "mode not supported" in windows if that was the problem.

Even if I boot to the bios my screen will only show "mode not supported". If I want to adjust anything in the bios I have to plug in my CRT monitor.

If anyone can help I would appreciate it.

    Thanks

It's a little wierd but from the sounds of it the LCD just isn't capable of displaying the really low resolutions. The boot screens and bios all run at either 320x240 or 640x480 at I believe 60Hz. I believe it's 640x480 but I'm not quite sure.

At any rate there isn't really anything you can do about that. When booting a computer you always start in low res, and then the OS uses it's drivers to make use of higher level functions on the video cards, which raises the resolution.

So basicly, it sounds like for whatever reason the LCD just doesn't support low resolutions, which is possible, considering low resolutions are really only needed to boot and configure a computer, so some companies and schools might like having monitors that can't display this. It would stop employee's and students from messing with stuff they shouldn't.

So unless it's a faulty monitor cord, it sounds like the only solution would be getting a diffrent LCD. Although check the official specs on the LCD to find out for sure.

Thank you for your reply. It only gets wierder, however. I hooked my LCD up to my parents computer and it displayed the boot logo fine. Can you think of anything else that could be causing this? By the way, my parents also have an LCD which displays their boot screens fine, but when hooked up to my computer it displays "Out of Range" during boot.

    Thank you for your help.

Must be the video card, then.

Strange.... that card has a TV-OUT on it, right? Can you try that? Are you using DVI or VGA?

Not sure about the tv-out... the card has inputs for cable and for a video source (like plugging in a camcorder to put the video on the computer). As for VGA or DVI, I have to use an adapter that came with the card to plug the monitor plug into the back of the card... so i'm guessing it's DVI? Sorry I don't know too much about this stuff.

Essentially, a VGA connector has 18 round pins in 3 rows, and a DVI connector has... ehhh, more, but square.

I'm guessing its a VGA to DVI adaptor. Might be that while the card is in VGA mode, the signal the card outputs doesn't work on the DVI interface. I don't know. I think it must be somthing like that.

That video card was out quite a while before DVI became a fairly standard thing to be using, so I doubt it was tested with VGA to DVI convertors, such as the ones you have.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry, it's actually the back of my card that has the DVI connection. My monitor is VGA. The VGA-->DVI connector came with my card. I was thinking of buying a new ATI card in the future but from what I've seen they are the same (DVI connection and comes with adapter). So if for some reason the adapter is causing this problem then I guess a new card wouldn't fix it... But then again, I can hook up a CRT monitor (also using the VGA adapter) and I can see the screens fine. LOL

the dvi -> vga adapter shouldn't be giving you any problems, I ran my LCD (Philips Brilliance 180P2) on a DVI->VGA cable without any of the problems you mentioned.
I think it's because your card doesn't detect your monitor correctly until it's drivers are initiliazed.
it's not the cable nor the monitor.

I am having the same problem.
My ATI Radeon 8500 attempts to put the monitor in 36KHzx60Hz mode during POST and the Windows boot screen, but that mode is not supported by the monitor, and hence I get a blank screen.
Who's fault is that? Dunnow. I guess I partially blame my LCD monitor for leaving out support for that mode, but I also blame the video card for not knowing the monitor couldn't do it.
How to fix it? Dunnow. That's a good one.
If anyone knows how, let me know.
PS. If I connect the LCD to the integrated video, it all works because that video hardware seems to know 36x60 mode won't work and falls back to 31.5x60, which does work on my LCD.
