Hello, I am a bit of a technophobe. I was hoping someone could help me. I would be very, very grateful. :)

On Saturday my computer stopped letting me use facebook and gmail. I can log in to facebook, but when I click on a link (photo, friend, inbox etc) nothing happens. On Gmail I mostly can't log in and when I do manage to it just goes to my inbox and I can't open any of my messages. It's as though my mouse is impotent. I click and click to no avail. It works perfectly well on other websites. It's just those two websites that aren't working.

I have used some free antispyware programmes and despite them finding and quaranting a few nasties it hasn't solved the problem.

    Thanks for any help.

By the way, I use Opera, but the problem is the same on Explorer and Flock.

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
    Notes:
    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can run steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

Hello. Thanks for helping me. I don't know if this is a malware problem or not. Facebook, gmail and other websites using java still don't work. This is across all the browsers from opera to flock. I have run all the software and attached the logs.

I uninstalled all the old Java Sun software like it said to do at the beginning of the 'Read & Run Me'; however, when I tried to install the the latest version of Java it says it is already installed. A box popped up saying 'This software has already been installed on your computer. Would you like to reinstall it?'. When I clicked 'yes' another box popped saying 'This action if only valid for products that are currently installed', which suggests that it's not installed after all. It then cancels the reinstall. I have checked on the 'add or remove' program thingy and Java is not listed on there.

    Thanks for your help.
I'm sorry if I am writing this on the wrong forum.

    Here is the mgtools zip.

BTW, I don't really have a clue. I don't know if facebook or gmail are in Java or if the problem is something else.

    I really appriciate your help.

Just to keep you posted. I solved the java installation problem by going to regedit and deleting all the java files from the HKEY_CURRENT_USER and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. I then had no problem uploading the latest version of Java. However, this hasn't solved the problem with facebook and gmail. I'm going to uninstall and reinstall all the browsers. Some expert help would really be appriciated as I'm pulling my hair out. Thanks very much.

We apologize for the delay..BJ has come down with the flu ...the human form of malware.

I will look at your logs asap and get back with you. :)

I am not seeing malware..you do have some leftovers from having removed AVG:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVG8

    You did not uninstall:
    Viewpoint Media Player

And yes, you need to install Java:
    Java Runtime 6

Thanks for your help Tim. I hope BJ gets better soon.

I installed Java after working out how to remove the old version with regedit.

I am still baffled. It's not maleware so that's good. Although gmail is unresponsive on most browsers, it works occassionally on firefox, although all these errors pop up: oops007, oops008, #102, #103. Luckily my mobile phone has gmail on it.

As for facebook. It is unresponsive (it loads but I cannot click on anything) on I.e.7, opera, firefox or chrome, but seems to function almost perfectly on Internet Explorer 6!

I'll hope it fixes itself, or search a bit more on the gmail forums. Thanks.

I suggest you post in software for those issues. Have you cleaned out your IE cache?

Try this before you go post in software:
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.

    * Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    * Under Main choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox browser

    * Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.
o NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

    If you use Opera browser

    * Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.
o NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

Then run CCleaner ...both the cleaner and the issues (making sure to do the backup when prompted).
