First of all you do have sound Media Player, Games. So I would think what you want is the sound the computer makes turning on/off opening window excreta
Control Panel…Sound and Audio Devices…Sound (tab) and pick your sound scheme

have you tried to go to start>control panel>internet options>advanced tab. Scroll down to 'multimedia', and check 'play sounds in web pages'.

    When did it start,
    have you downloaded anything lately

    Hi

    What is your Windows Version?

If Vista this has a different sound control mixer panel than that of XP and can adjust PC System and Browser sounds independently to that of the general speaker which WMP and Games likely use, worth checking in case sould is 0 or muted.

Rigth click Speaker in System Tray and choose Mixer, should be similar in XP.

Also double check that the Windows Audio Service in Services is Started and Startup Type is set to Automatic, To get to Services in XP click Start > Run and type services.msc and hit enter, scroll down till you find Windows Audio Service and click Start and Automatic for Startup Type > Apply

and if the Audio Service is the cause but on a reboot you have loss of system sound then this registry tweak is one to fix this, Kellys Korner line 371 Restore Sound (ONLY use if needed and backup your registry before using )

The problem started about 4 days ago and all i downloaded was new drivers for realtek than unistalled them and got new ones again when the internet sound was not working. my housemate also uses my pc so he might of downloaded something i am unaware of.

Replying to Halo: I am using windows xp professional. Tried ur solutions and still nothing :( i am in the process of trying the registry fixes will update when done

    Are you updated to SP3?
If you are, HD audio will not install without a mod.
If this is the case, let us know and I will provide a fix.

This is your chipset driver from Abit: nForece500 Series Chipset Driver
    Install it first.
This is the Realtek driver from Abit for your board: Realtek High Definition Audio Driver R190
You may have to also, install the KB888111 if the Abit Driver doesn't contain it: . KB888111xpsp2.exe

If the audio driver install fails, post a screenshot of your Device Manager and any drivers with a ? or ! in front of them.

I'm not sure that this will solve your problem.

Check: Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices: click the Volume tab.
Click Advanced in Device Volume area.
Make sure that you have Volume Control, Wave, SW Synth, and CD Player all listed in the Control. Make sure none are muted and the volumes are at a listenable level.
If not there, click Options>Properties and mark the boxes for them.
