I have a Compaq Presario V5206OM and it is running extremely slow....and sometimes not at all. It started running slower a couple of months ago and has gotten progressively worse. I currently run AVG AV, and Spybot Search & Destroy. All scans are coming back clean. I tried to run a scan yesterday and after 4 and a half hours it was only 63% of the way finished. When I look in the processes tab it shows about 50-60 processes running. I wrote them all down and looked them up in processlibrary.com and many of them came up as a trojan or malware. Why wouldn't they be showing on any of the scans? Could this be a hardware issue and not a virus/malware issue? I know its an older unit and I am going to replace it in the next 60 days but would like to at least be able to use this until then. I am in the process of the Malware Removal/Cleaning Process that you have listed but because it is running so slow, it is taking forever!! Am I at least going down the right track?

Thanks for any help you can offer. This computer stuff is new to me!!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Uninstall both of these and then run follow the instructions further down.

Because you are probably misinterpreting the very poor and misleading information on that site. If you want to really find out if you are having malware problems and get a proper diagnosis, continue with the below.

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:
    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

Thank you for your response! I am still in the Removal process, currently running the SAS scan. By the way, I am running SP sP3. Also, my CPU is bouncing between 71-96%.

So I am currently running the ComboFix Scan. I have had this message for about 45 min now: "Scanning for infected files...This typically doesn't take more than 10 minutes. However, scan times for badly infected machines may easily double"

In the tutorial, it said that ComboFix would list the stages as they were completed. It hasn't done anything as of yet and it has been 45 min. Should I shut it down and restart the scan?

Shutdown ComboFix ( which may require holding in the power button ) and then skip ComboFix and continue with the remaining scans.
