I appreciate any help you can provide; I did complete all steps in "READ & RUN ME FIRST" and I continue to have the malware problem. I attempted to attach logs but the 'manage attachments' button does not function for me. It appears to be enabled, I've turned off pop-up blocker, and when I click the button....nothing happens. Can you please advise? Thank you so much!!!

Ok, I was able to attach now.

My home page is changed to safetytool, I have a security alert warning (lower right task bar area) identifying: networm-i.virus@fp as a threat, advising me to click for removal software.

I have windows xp, use ie for a browser.

I was able to download and run all scans and tools as specified in your tutorial. I believe I followed all directions and look forward to your help.

There was 8 spyware and one root something identified in one of the scans, and I wasn't sure how to interpret the reports in the other scans.

will attempt to attach add'l logs in new post.

    Thank you!!

I thought these files were attached to post #2, but then they were gone.

Boy, do I need help!

The initial clean-up work that I've already done as described in your
"READ & RUN ME" has improved the problem considerably.
No more pop-ups, and is running better/faster, but still have the security alert balloon trying to lead me to a removal website (virusburster)

    Thanks for your help.

    Download Pocket KillBox
    • Save it to your desktop or a place easy to find.
    • Do not run it yet
Please look in Add/Remove Programs for the following and uninstall them if found:

    Video ActiveX Object

Now scan with HijackThis and check the boxes for the following entries:
( Make sure ALL browser windows are closed when you click FIX )

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {1a1ddc19-5893-43ab-a73f-f41a0f34d115} - C:\Program Files\Video ActiveX Object\isaddon.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: Verizon Broadband Toolbar - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-D0FC-E57AF4D5FA7D} - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\VERIZO~1\SFP\vzbb.dll

    O3 - Toolbar: Verizon Broadband Toolbar - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-D0FC-E57AF4D5FA7D} - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\VERIZO~1\SFP\vzbb.dll
    O3 - Toolbar: Protection Bar - {96ebbe6a-2864-4345-b32b-26ee9be524b5} - C:\Program Files\Video ActiveX Object\iesplugin.dll

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)
    O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.net - {F4430FE8-2638-42e5-B849-800749B94EED} - C:\Program Files\PartyGaming.Net\PartyPokerNet\RunPF.exe (file missing)
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.net - {F4430FE8-2638-42e5-B849-800749B94EED} - C:\Program Files\PartyGaming.Net\PartyPokerNet\RunPF.exe (file missing)

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: WRNotifier - WRLogonNTF.dll (file missing)

    O21 - SSODL: flammei - {9d635a36-6b3c-4146-8625-f3aaf507bbf8} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vcehaeb.dll

Again, make sure ALL browser windows are closed when you click FIX.

Copy the contents of the below Quote Box to Notepad. Then click File and then Save As. Change the Save as Type to All Files. Name the file fixme.reg and then click save. (make sure you save it somewhere you can find it. Saving it to your Desktop may make that easy.) Then double-click on the fixme.reg file on your desktop (or locate it with Windows Explorer and double click on it if not saved to the Desktop) and when it prompts to Add in to the registry, say yes.

Now, Please boot into Safe Mode, be sure you have the Viewing of Hidden Files & Folders Enabled per the tutorial. Now, navigate to and DELETE the following if they should remain:

C:\Program Files\Video ActiveX Object Delete this whole folder if it exist!

Next, run CCleaner to clean up cookies and temp files.

    Locate PocketKillbox
(Procede with this step even if they do not show in blue)

Next, you will be entering items into Pocket KillBox. Please select the “Delete on Reboot” Option. Copy&Paste each of the file names listed below into the box one by one, making sure Delete on Reboot is Checked for each entry. Click the Red X for each entry, but DO NOT Allow your machine to be rebooted until the last item has been entered:

** Note: For any of the .dll files, check the Unregister .dll Before Deleting box as well. If this option is not enabled, don't worry about it.

    • If you get an error message about Pending Operations, just reboot your computer manually.

After you complete the above, REBOOT and proceed with the rest of this fix...

Next Reset Web Settings & Default Security Settings

    To Reset Web Settings:
Right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.

If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK

    To Default Security Settings:
Right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Security Tab and click Default Level for Internet, Local Intranet, Trusted Sites, and Restricted Sites.

    Note for IE 7 users:
Select Internet Options, then the Advanced Tab and then the Reset button under Reset Internet Explorer Settings.

Finally, I would like you to flush your System Restore points. Please follow the instructions in the below:

    • Disable and Re-enable System Restore

    • Turn OFF System Restore to flush any bad Restore Points.

    • Then, follow the instructions at the bottom of the linked page to Re-enable the Restore Utility which will create a fresh restore point.
After you complete the above reboot once more and then scan with HijackThis and attach the new log.

Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now.

Thanks so much for your help! :)

I followed all steps and the security alert balloon and virusburster icon are gone!

I've attached the new hjt log.

    couple of things:

before I went through the processes you advised, I encountered
CounterSpy scan results from a scan that must have run automatically overnight; 2 items of concern:
    -trojan-downloader.zlob.media-codec
    -desktop scam

    They were quarantined and removed.

When I reset default web settings I changed my home page from google to majorgeeks, but I received three warnings in the lower right of my screen stating that the URL was attempting to be changed to microsoft-something or msn-something and one other, before I got the alert for changing it to majorgeeks. I blocked the first three and allowed the change to majorgeeks.

Was it malware trying to change it to the other three?

Also, my start-up is now very slow, and when shutting down there is and
'end program' window that comes up twice for ccApp.

Don't know what, if any of this, is significant.

I appreciate your help and will await further instructions.

    Thanks so much!

    Cindy

Ok...great....I did the helpme.reg in notepad.

How was that last hjt scan?
    Does it look clean now?

I had thought that the Norton Internet Security program protected me.....but apparently it doesn't!

Should I uninstall Norton and keep the other programs I downloaded for this process?

Thanks so much for your help!
I'd be in rough shape without you.....this is such a great service!

Everything looks ok, the previous reg fix should help speed up a few things. Personally, yes I would get rid of Norton as it is a major resource hog and not to mention doesn't do all that great protecting.

I recommend AVG AntiVirus, ZoneAlarm Firewall and Spy Sweeper.

You should see this article on How to Protect yourself from malware!

    Thank you so much!

Your help has resolved the problem, computer is running better than ever!

I still need to uninstall Norton and install the programs you recommended.

My question now is, do I need to uninstall the programs I installed to fix this problem?
Forgive my ignorance...but I now have all these thing on my desktop and I don't know what to do with them: ShowNew; GetRunKey; fixme.reg; helpme.reg; killbox.exe; hijackthis; spybotsd; counterspy, etc.

Do I still need these? should I delete, or uninstall?

    Thanks for your patience.

Many items we used during the cleaning can be removed as they are no longer required; however you should keep Spybot installed because it provides Immunization and is a good malware scanner.
