Hi, this is my first post, and it is a question because I desperately need help with my cpu.

It all started when i removed intel's heat sink to check if my mobo was compatible with anotther heat sink and when i put it back to its place and tried to turn on the pc, the temperature (in the time from my pressing of the button to viewing the bios settings) had raised to more than 90 degrees celsius!!!!!!!!

That happens each time i try to do turn the pc on and from fear of not harming my 3.2ghz p4 i turn it off as soon as the warning sound of the motherboard begins...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

you probably didnt mount the heatsink on correctly. make sure that there is connectivty between the heatsink and the cpu. also make sure that u are using thermal grease or a thermal pad. both are to increase the conductivity from the cpu to the heatsink. did u reconnect the fan? is it running at normal speeds?

thx for the quich reply first of all.

about the connectivity you mentioned, i was worried that maybe that was the fault but i dont know where to find a replacement for that little gray thing that the heat sink had in its bottom

the fan is recconected and running normally...

what is a thermal grease and thermal pad and do you know where could i find them???

    thx again for the help

you can buy them in most computer stores.. thermal grease is better than a thermalpad, i think, and if u can go for Arctic Silver 5, which is pretty good stuff. I dont know where u live. if u live in the UK u can get that stuff at overclockers.co.uk (see link at bottom) they are pretty reliable and have next day delivery options.

here u can see how to apply thermalgrease:

Yeah, the gray thing was probably the thermal pad. You'll need one in order to keep the temperature down. Or, like Olley said, you can replace it with thermal grease, such as Artic Silver 5.

You need the thermal pad/paste so there is heat transfer, you use the heatsink fan to keep the temp down http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
