Hello all! Thanks in advance for any help you are able to provide.

Within the last 6 or 7 days my laptop has begun exhibiting the following symptoms:

    • Startup takes an extremely long time (sometimes nearly 10 minutes for everything to finish loading, and the only things loading at startup that I know of are Zone Alarm Pro, SuperAntiSpyware and Eset Nod32 Antivirus) and the Windows XP theme music skips on startup as if the CPU is straining
    • Shutdown takes an extremely long time and error messages appear requiring me to manually close certain processes before the computer can shut down
    • The computer is not capable of playing music or video files as they skip horribly, making them unwatchable.
    • The computer just runs slowly in general, as if the CPU is being overworked.

I don't remember specifically downloading anything before the onset of these issues. The computer is mainly used for homework (Excel, Word, Microsoft Project, Google Earth, Google Sketchup, etc.), personal computing (surfing the internet, email, listening to music, watching movies) and light music production (FL Studio 8). I know the system isn't exactly a powerhouse, however I had never experienced any of these symptoms before this last week. I have gone through all the steps in the Malware Removal Guide, as well as the corresponding steps in the Windows XP Cleaning Procedure, however it did not resolve my issues. My logs are attached, and my system stats can be found below. Thanks again for any help!

    Dell Latitude D800
    MS Windows XP Professional SP3
Intel Pentium M Processor 1.80GHz, 1.0GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200

    Hi there and welcome

Important Notice: A new version of SUPERAntiSpyware is out. You are using an outdated version.
    • Please uninstall your current version (this is necessary).
    • Then download this SUPERAntiSpyware
    • Install this new version. It may tell you that you need to reboot to complete the installation. You must reboot at this time.
    • After the reboot, run SUPERAntiSpyware and immediately click the Check for Updates button to get more updates for the database.
    • Now run a new full scan of your system. And attach this log later.

I will check your logs for malware, but if they come up clean you will have to work out your issues in the software forum.

    Thanks
    Kes

    Let's try this

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a couple malware files.

    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it
(make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:

    KILLALL::

    File::
    c:\windows\system32\TmpA59729766
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\gaopdxpxmpfuxn.sys.vir

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Could you please get this windrv.sys into a zipped file and attach it for me in your next post? To do this, see the below:

Please go to start > Run and paste in the following:

Also attach for me the log from running ComboFix.

Let me know how things are running

    Thanks
    Kes

    Hi Kes,

Thanks so much for taking the time to help me out with my issue. I have followed all your instructions and I'm attaching the logs you requested. My computer is still running very slow, especially during start up and shut down, which leads me to believe that this may be a software issue, but I'd appreciate it if you'd take a quick glance at my logs just in case.

    Thanks again!

    RJ

Whilst I check your logs could you see the below:

I would like to get some more info on the C:\WINDOWS\system32\windrv.sys file. Locate it again using Windows Explorer and then right click on it and select Properties. Now see if there is a Version tab in the window. If so, select the Version tab and on the next window select each of the listed Item names (one at a time) to get more info about the file. The most important Item is the company name. If there is no Version tab, tell me that too.

    Thanks
    Kes

Unfortunately, there is no version tab. The only information I could gather from the properties is that it is a 1.12kb file originally created on February 1st of this year. I can't remember what, if any, software I installed around this time.

I will have to speak to Chaslang regarding this I think. Your logs look clean to me--but I am suspicious about that file.

Will get back to you asap.

The file is safe. :) Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
