Hi guys thanks for any help / advise in advance its very much appreciated.

I would like to setup up a home network that allowed me to access my files from any computer on the network and to backj up on to one shared place. ALso I would like to access the files over the network using my laptop whilst away from home. Please tell me what I need to buy and how to do it or where to find easy to complete instructions.

    I have a
    BT home hub 2 http://www.shop.bt.com/products/bt-home-hub-2-0-56B4.html

    A Desktop Pc - Vista SP2 intel core duo 2 2.66ghz 4gb ram 802.11 Wireless lan card. Realtek RTL8168c/8111c family pci- e gigabit ethernet nic(ndis 6.0)
Microsoft ISATAP Adapter#2- NOT working This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)

I intend to buy a suitable laptop and am under the impression that I will need a cloud external hardrive like WD My Book Live Personal Cloud Storage 2 TB Network Attached Storage?

    Thanks again

    Simon

If Windows is not pulling the drivers off of its driver cloud, you will have to manually download them from Realtek's website.

To set up a home network, you need a router, unless your ISP provides you with a modem that is also a router, then you need a switch if connecting computers via ethernet, otherwise if wanting to connect through wifi, you just need a router that has a wifi radio built in.

Is the BT hub I have shown above suitable?? Do I need the cloud storage device? Are there any easy to follow guides on how to configure the networ??

    Thanks

    Simon

Yes, it is a wireless N device, so I see no problem why not. Cloud storage is a pseudo term. If you want a network storage drive, that is your choice, but not a necessity.

not many answers as yet simon...

Ok how many computers on your network and what O/S's are they running?
This is important as different settings will be required for say Vista and XP.

As to setting up a home network it should be quite simple.
Do you know how to set static IP addresses on each computer?
Have you used the set up pages inside the router before?

do you know how to log on to the router?

Just some back ground so i can keep the answers as concise as possible

Incorrect. Hooking up any of the operating systems to a network is pretty much cut and dry and there is no extra settings needed.

What does this do with the OP wanting to set up a network?

Again, what does this have to do with setting up a network?

Again, what does this have to do with setting up a network?

You pretty much lost the OP with your questions.
