    Hi,

I would really appreciate any help you could give me with removing some stubborn malware from my system. I tried going through your read & run first, but my malware problem is so bad that I can't even download most of the programs you ask me to run (everything just gets hung up).

A few days ago I got a warning from Norton Internet Security saying an intrusion attempt was blocked called Topmoxie Recoding Downloads and Offers. I would get this warning everytime I turned on my laptop. Since then, I have run a lot of scans and instead of getting better, the problem keeps getting worse. A full system scan with Norton Internet Security and Windows Defender show some tracking cookies which have since been cleaned. Adaware also detected some tracking cookies, which I deleted. Spybot Search & Destroy just recently found a vurtumonde which it supposedly cleaned (and isn't detected anymore) but since then the symptoms are 100x worse! It takes a really long time to do anything (including rebooting). Whenever I open firefox I get tons of popups (internet explorer is much worse). I can't open a lot of websites.. it just says "loading" and gets hung up.

I don't know what to do! Please help!!! :confused

    Hi,

I was able to download and run most of the programs in the read & run first instructions. I couldn't get combofix to run though... once I enter what you said to enter in the run box, it opens up and then tells me that a file is corrupt and to download a fresh copy. I tried re-downloading but it still didn't work so I just went on to MGtools. The SAS, malwarebytes, and MGtools log files are attached.

I think I may have tracked down the source of the problem. The day all of this started, I downloaded a player from fox.com to watch episodes of a show I missed. It seems crazy that a Fox player would do this, but it's the only thing I can track it down to.

    I really appreciate the help!

    Thank you!

    Julie

i uninstalled my old version of java and when i tried to reinstall a new version i get an error message saying the necessary temp file is missing. i now have no java.

and since running SAS, i get error messages when i reboot that there is an error loading files (C:\Windows\System32\WVUkHYoO.dll) and (C:\Users\Ju\AppData\Local\Temp\ushtdeqc.dll)

    thanks again!!! :)

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following:

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

How long have you had the "I_Give..." program?

Note where most of the problems were in either the SAS or the MBAM logs.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and tell me how things are running.

okay i did all of that and it seems like the popups have stopped. i also rebooted and got no error messages. the mglogs.zip file is attached.

i actually downloaded the igive program the day after i got the first message from norton, so it may not have started the problem but could have made it worse. a few days later i started having all of these problems. i'm usually really careful about downloading things, but igive.com is a charity website so i trusted it... so much for trying to do something good!!

any advice on the java installation error? should i try reinstalling now that the malware is removed? do the logs look okay now?

    thanks again!!!

    Sweet.....your logs look clean.
You don't need to remove the I_Give stuff...I was just asking.

    Yes....try to download from here:
    Java Runtime 6

NOw lets clean up your temps:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.

    * Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    * Under Main choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox browser

    * Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.
o NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

    If you use Opera browser

    * Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.
o NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. If we used ComboFix then UNINSTALL COMBOFIX (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
    2.
    * Click START then RUN
    * Now type "%userprofile%\Desktop\cf" /u in the runbox and click OK.
    * Note: The space between the cf and the /U, it must be there.
    3. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    4. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    5. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
    * Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
    * Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    6. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Everything has been working fine (no pop-ups or lagging in firefox, java installation worked) so I was going through the final steps. I re-enabled UAC and and rebooted and when windows started I got an error from Norton that topmoxie.com is requesting build files. Should I be concerned about this? :confused

This would fall under the heading of "user choice" ...personally I would remove it as it will "offer you coupons and such when you hit certain web sites....you should find it in add/remove programs and then do a search for any remainders after you uninstall.

hmm... i don't see topmoxie in add/remove programs and it doesn't come up in any of the spyware scans. should i just do i search for anything with topmoxie in the filename and delete?

i tried to remove the igive program (just because i'm afraid that it may have caused problems) but i can't uninstall it! it is in my add/remove programs list but when i try to uninstall it, nothing happens. is there another way to uninstall?

other than that everything seems to be back to normal!! thank you thank you thank you! :)

Yes do a search for both and remove any folders you find...you can also check CCleaner and see if it will uninstall thru that...

    And you are most welcome.

    arghh!!!

i still can't get the igive thing to uninstall. i tried uninstalling through ccleaner... doesn't work. i tried disabling it before uninstalling... nothing. do you think the one of the spyware scans removed parts of it and thats why i can't uninstall?

apparently igive is a topmoxie program... now i know why i keep getting that topmoxie requesting build files warning. "user choice" eh? not really by choice if i can't uninstall! this is really frustrating

You may just have to go to the folders ...open them and delete all the contents...then delete the folder.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    That should do it.

Run CCleaner and click on the issues tab....have it scan and then remove those items...it will pop up a box asking if you want to make a backup ...do so!!!

Then tell me how things are. :)
