    Hi there,

I have had trouble with this vista unit for sometime, unfortunately my half brother had his hands on it for a number of years, before i got here.. and well basically next next next and damn the consequences was the order of the day..he is also chronic gamer. My older half brother was prone to user Limewire good lord and both used torrents on a regular basis.

    I have Admin rights

    Ok anyway the issues are

    1) Cannot install SP2 for Vista

Even though i tried following a few guides, downloading the SP2 file localy and also tried installing it while setting I.E 8 as the default.
I even tried unpluging from the internet disabling antivirus Nortons 2012, after doing a scan, and installing the SP2 patch.. no good at all :cry

I realize that Microsoft Updates are now un-supported for Vista SP1 and can no longer be installed to Vista SP1 installs. I can not also upgrade the Internet Exploder from 8, so I have been told as its unsupported with only using Vista SP1.

I read that if you cant install SP1 and the suggested fix doesnt appear to work I will have to do a clean install...

    2) Internet is a real snail slow, its like watching paint dry, especially for facebook and larger picture video orientated sites etc..yes I appreciate there is more data to load than your standard largely text based website, but even so its a dog conx to download on.

The connection "is always slow" after the cap is gone, maybe as an estimation more like 2 - 8 kbs when watching things as they download. Yes I am aware that the server you are downloading from can limit your download as a load / balancing thing etc.. or for othe reasons - this speed download speed seems consitent from several web-sites.
The supposed true speed, via several tests show the speed is .13 mbs up / down while another shows that the conx speed is around 5kbps - I am aware that these can be misleading so I went to the local "consumers" info for the people based website to tried a test that said it averaged at .13mb although it peaked for a burst in the 100's at times.

We have a tiny broadband package - data cap is 2Gb.
I am aware speed is reduced when the tiny 2gb cap is reached.
Apparently it should still at least be at the old dial up speed 33.6 / 56 Kbps - at least thats what I have been informed.

There used to be, untill recently, two conenctions an IPv4 and IPv6 networks which got merged into 1 network on the IPv6 - via the windows network interface area, is this potentialy an issue and not helping?

I have also recently run CCleaner and deleted heaps of junk 400Mb + and thats only from my profile which is only like 1 month old. I suspect much of this was from microsoft updates which kept failing due to the support for SP1 terminating. Hopefully this may help, although for some "geek force" ;) reason I suspect it wont.

    3) We had untill 1 hour or so ago, multiple computers in our default named "workgroup".

My lovely step brother was prone to giving out the security key for access to the wireless router..anything for playing his games. :cry

I have changed the computers wireless router to now use WAP-psk and not its former WEP / 64bit setting. I have also turned of the automatic discovery / join? Are there other things that i have overlooked to enhance its security?

I have changed this computers ID = name and made an alternative workgroup name for this, so as to not share the default workgroup name.
Now there are the same former workgroup computers appearing under a default #workgroup name.
I recognise 1 of these "other" computers in this other default workgroup name, I think its my step brothers friends laptop p.c ID / Name.
Although currently they, my step bro and his friend, are not within range of this router, they are currently several kms away with their laptops at my step bros friends house. My Step bro goes there at the weekends for faster internet access lol.

*I would like to know how to get these rogue p.c's out of here fullstop.

    ~GOSH ~

I have read from the Microsoft site, that if you cant install SP1 and the suggested fix doesnt appear to work, then I will have to do a clean install.
OMG there are like 5 users on this p.c, of course they all want to keep everything just the way it is.. including their internet settings favs etc..

Are there any downloaders or helpers perhaps accelerators that gamers use frequently / commonly that stop Sp1 from being upgraded, does Vista have any crazy things or settings that need to be uninstalled / disabled before this can be patched... Please help me avoid a clean install, re-registering the O/S with MS and then configure the internet / router and all the users or basically everything.. =(

Also is there anything such as PC decrapifyer, which I have only vaguley heard of ( free software ), that can be relied on to do its job?

Thanks for reading this and any hints tips or tricks you can offer are much appreciated. If I can get Vista's Sp2 installed that would be half the job...perhaps. I look forward to your helpful suggestions.

    Thank you :wave

This might help with the installation of sp2. As for the rest of the problems you might want to try running some malware removal tools. Your anti virus software might have gotten compromised. I would try Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware. I am not versed that well in the use of vista but have had some experience with it. Hope this helps you out.

Yes, you can get PC De-Crapifier at http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=5223. I think it may indeed be helpful in this situation. The download page also has a video which is well worth watching.

I use Revo Unistaller (the free version) rather than using Add/Remove in the Control Panel when I want to uninstall something and also get rid of most of the junk remaining in the registry.
I keep the setting on moderate (3rd down). Revo will first run the programs own uninstall, if it has one. Then it will look through the registry and show you the results. Caution: if the program's uninstaller tells you that you need to reboot to complete the uninstall, cancel the reboot because Revo is still running and not finished. After Revo finishes and you delete the bolded items from the registry, then you can reboot.
Also be sure you look over the registry items and only select those in bold for removal.
