Hey there. I had a problem that I needed some help on.

Basically, when I start my comp. it boots fine. At the welcome screen, I can move the mouse too. The problem is that it freezes when I press any key. The blinking line on the text input (where you put the password) still blinks though.

I've tried booting into Safe Mode as well. Same thing when I press any key. It freezes. I've tried "Last Known Good Configuration" as well.

I'm not quite sure what to do anymore. This is another comp. that I'm using.

Are there any "recovery xp installation software" that I can download and perhaps recover my comp?

Or, is it possible to get rid of the password on the welcome screen? If I can do that, then I might be able to login (since I won't have to input anything).

What about doing a system restore without logging in, is that possible? If I could just get in once and back-up my data, then I'd be happy. And then. I can re-install XP.

What if I get an external HD, take out this computers HD and put it into mine and boot XP from there. Is it possible then if I can somehow back my data up onto an external HD?

Thanks, any help is greatly appreciated.

But how am I supposed to back-up if I can't even get in?

And, I'll try the keyboard thing at a friend's house but I don't see how that's gonna help since I'm using that exact same keyboard on another keyboard...(I only have one keyboard and screen since the others are crap so I moved my bad PC to this one)

    zbd21:

Tthe answer is not reinstall (thats a cop out for the inexperienced), its wait for someone who has an idea on how to fix it.

So, let me make sure I have this right--your mouse locks up when you go to type in the password?

The mouse keeps working until you do, right? Do you have an actual windows XP CD?

I'll reserve my suggestion until I hear back. A reinstall may not be needed, at least not in the traditional sense.

    To TimW:

The keyboard is a USB type but the USB is connected to a mouse thingy that connects to the mouse part of the CPU. (I don't know if you got that since it might be confusing.)

    To Adrynalyne:

Yes, it boots up fine up till the welcome screen. Everything works fine. I can click the user accounts but when I click the "?" nothing happens. Anyways, the moment I press any key on my keyboard, the mouse stops but the cursor still blinks where you input the password. Yeah, the mouse keeps working until I press any key.

And yes, I do have the XP installation CD if thats what you mean.

    Thanks,
    Prim3

    You are most welcome :)

Some background--your filter driver registry entry for the keyboard was incorrect.

This was the easiest way to fix it.
