Firstly, thank you for the wonderful information and service you guys provide her on Major Geeks! I am new here, and really hope you guys can help me. My computer has been infected with something that ruined my Norton Antivirus program, and has made my system very slow. I am a photographer, and this is my primary workstation. The infection seemed to happen when I was searching for reviews on some new photography equipment. I clicked on a link by findarticles.com, and the system became unresponsive.

Whatever this is has done away with my AVG antispyware, and the scan logs cant be found. It has also shut down my Avast virus protection. I uninstalled what was left of Norton, before I installed Avast. Here are the logs from Combofix and MGlogs.

    Thank You

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Not according to your log!!!! You have all or Norton's Internet Security Suite still installed and as such it was a bad idea to install Avast.

Goto Add/Remove programs and uninstall all of the below:
    LiveReg (Symantec Corporation)
    LiveUpdate 3.0 (Symantec Corporation)
    Norton Internet Security
    Norton Personal Firewall (Symantec Corporation)
    Norton Personal Firewall
    Norton WMI Update

Then run this: Norton Removal Tool (SymNRT)

Also uninstall the below old versions of software:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
    Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4

Then reboot your PC. We will cleanup anything that remains in later steps.

Do you know what this Spruce program is that was recently installed?

    Also what is the below?
    O4 - Global Startup: hueyTray.lnk = C:\Program Files\Pantone\huey\hueyTray.exe

And do you know what the below folder is for? If not, what do you see in this folder? It is also new.
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Rabio

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    F3 - REG:win.ini: load=C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssttu.exe
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {42A5E581-197F-4C6B-B3EB-08F7080C46F5} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssttu.dll
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [LoadWatcher] Test
    O9 - Extra button: Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe (file missing)
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Windows Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    chaslang,
Thank you for your help. Your suggested actions have greatly helped my computer!:)

O4 - Global Startup: hueyTray.lnk = C:\Program Files\Pantone\huey\hueyTray.exe is the color correction program that I use for correctly color editing photographs. It ensures that what is displayed on the monitor is what comes out of the printer.

The only Norton product that would uninstall in Add/Remove programs was Antivirus 2006, and LiveReg. The Personal Firewall, WMI Update, and Live Update 3.0 were listed but Add/Remove programs would not remove the

Do I need to use the Norton Removal Tool (SymNRT) to remove what is left of the Norton programs?

I did remove Java Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03 and Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4.

Spybot Search & Destroy 1.5 listed Rabio as a threat, but was unable to automatically delete it. I manually deleted it, and it is now gone.

I had to re-boot my machine in Safe Mode to delete the "Spruce" program. I don't know what that program was, but it was installed at exactly the same time I started having trouble with my machine.

I ran the analyse.exe and checked the items you listed, and then hit fix.

Next, I ran The Avenger, and copied everything from the quote box to it.

    I then ran Ccleaner.

My machine is now giving me a series of messages upon re-boot. The first is in a command prompt box and says "C:Windows\system 32\cmd.exe The system cannot find the path specified The system cannot find the file specified". The second message is in a window and says "Windows-No disk Exception Processing Message c0000012 Parameters 75b6bf9c 4

The log files you requested are supplied as attachments.

Thank you for all the help, I now have hope for my machine!:)

Yes! You needed to run that where I specified and before giving me new logs. After running it, you will have to attach a new MGlogs.zip file before we can continue but what until you do the below.

Also Avenger did not run properly. And also a new bad file showed up. So try the Avenger fix using the below information but this time shut down all protection programs first. Then attach the new Avenger log. And then get the new MGlogs.zip file and attach it.

    chaslang,
I ran the Norton clean up tool, and I believe all traces of Norton products are now gone.

    I re-ran Avenger, and the MGtools\GetLogs.bat file.

    Thanks agian! :)

Okay Avenger is still not working like we need. Let's do this another way using ComboFix. Make sure ComboFix.exe is on your Desktop as requested in the READ & RUN ME.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: SpruceBHO - {54DE7259-C729-45B1-BBD8-4BE9B5BD8248} - (no file)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now print the below instructions because at a point during them you MUST (this is can be critical) shutdown all browsers. I will tell you when to exit the browsers during the muti-part procedure.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have the below icons on your Desktop (double click the thumbnail to expand it)
    CFScript.jpg
    • Now refer to the above image and use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from ComboFix.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    You're logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix then UNINSTALL COMBOFIX (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN
      • Now type combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
      • Note: The space between the X and the U, it must be there.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
