I had a weak PSU with my quad core & 4870 and had a few power failures, that basically red lighted me into getting a new PSU that same day. Who can afford to blow their PC right.

Hardware is what I know best, through trial & error (bang) LOL

Thanks Triaxx but I got it, and I got it for $145USD aparently lol

Hooked it up (btw I'm talking about the Sapphire HD4850 512mb) installed easy, got newest drivers nice and easy, CCC upgrade is awesome, performance compared to the x1950 is......how can I put this......insumountable lol I ran the 3dmark on both, the x1950 bottomed out at 8fps and peaked at 26, the 4850 bottomed out at 24 and peaked at 84, thats around 300-350% faster and more powerful. Very impressed, temps running FEAR 2 on max are a stable 57C (high I know but lack of proper cooling) and the boy just HAD to try crysis on high too, temp went upto 64C, not great but not horrible either. So now it's running a steady 45-55C, I told him to ease off until proper cooling and PSU are hooked up.
But the PSU seems to be handling it ok so far, no spikes or drops and it's pretty cool, only luke warm to the touch.

    So all in all......problem solved.

Obviously he needs new PSU (on the way) and a new case with some fans, he's gonna have to buy them himself so from here on in it's his choice as to how long the card lasts.

I've given him instructions to check the temp every 15 mins of play or so and if it gets over 70C to back off and let it cool down to 45C at least.
    Can't do anymore.

But thanks to all those who helped, you helped me solve a problem thats been bugging him and me for a few months now.

    Kudos all round :)

My 4870 Maxes 250FPS on the canyon flight HDR test 1 and bottomed at 60FPS for some reason.

I also have a good reason to replace my mobo & CPU, the CPU tests get between 0-3FPS LOL a terrible result, I belive my old dual core did better :-D

Yeah the q6600 manage 1-2fps on the cpu test.

250?...seriously?......I'm buying that card, don't care about no bottles :p

I wonder if it supposed to be so low, there are a lot of frames in the test & at 1-3FPS it's tedious to watch :-D

I've seen it peak at 300FPS on that very HDR test, but I don't know what has changed sice :confused

It's a flawless card I must say, but it is let down by it's driver :(, that & my install of DX10 that seems to have made everything worse :-D

I thought that you know, a Q6600 surely hits more than 2fps although I know very little about the CPU giving fps graphically.

You talk about tedious, man I ran 3dmark on my Athlon 3400, 1gb ram and X700....I don't think any of the tests got above 8fps LOL

Well GPU's are alot like CPU's, they are made from the same sort of tech I mean the 4870 X2 is made using 40nm tech but the new AMD Phenom II's are 45nm so GPU's are a little ahead of CPU's sometimes :-D#

At one point there was no such thing as a graphics card not even on-board, that could be due to a lack of grahcics on such computers OS's. But CPU's are capable of calculating all sorts of equations but GPU's can only render.

I am not very knowlageble of such things though LOL

I remember running 3D Mark 05 on a very old system I had:

    *AMD 1700 1.3GHz (single core)
    *128MB RAM
    *nVidia GeForce MX440 128MB

That was slow as F**k :-D

Where did Voodoo go, who bought them ATI or nVidia?

P2's P3's P4's Athlon 2100 I think, Athlon 2400, ram comming out of my arse that should have sailed with Noah lol I like to keep stuff LOL

I used to have a stockpile of old PC parts :-D

Thankfully I found buyers for all of it except an old CPU & GPU :cool
