    Hello,
    We recently switched ISPs, and somewhere in the process ended up with our first batch of viruses/spyware. We noticed the probelm a couple of days ago when we logged on and had a weird second user named pywl$. Now, everytime we log on Symantec is popping up a message saying it found and deleted infostealer.gampass....just keeps popping up, though, so we're thinking it's not really being deleted? Also, we've run lots of different programs, which are finding trojans and all kinds of messes. After researching it on my own for 2 days straight, and trying everything I find or can think of, I think its time for some HELP!!!! :)

    Thanks. I've attached the logs.

    Run this: Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    Winrp

    File::
    c:\windows\system32\[u]0[/u]0040fd6.sys
    c:\windows\system32\goxp.exe
    c:\windows\S6A03E293.tmp

    Registry::
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\svchost]
    "Winrp"=-

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the prvevious file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Alrighty...I followed the instructions you gave, and I've attached the logs. Just ran into one glitch while running MGTools...and error popped up that said, "Application has generated an exception that could not be handled. Process id=0xb10 (2832), Thread id= 0xb84 (2948). Click OK to terminate, click cancel to debug" I had to click OK to get it to continue.

    Also, I'm not sure if this will help you, but our latest "symptom" is that everytime the computer reboots (including after this last Combofix reboot) Windows Firewall and our Symantec program both turn off momentarily, and pop up warnings, then turn back on.

    Thanks for the help!

    Leave it to me to get a stubborn one! :) Ok...here's the new logs!

    I still encountered a glitch while running MGTools if that matters:

    "Application has generated an exception that could not be handled. Process id=0x440(1088) Thread id= 0xf00 (3840). Click Ok to terminate...yada ya..."

    Thanks!!

    One last thing to do:

    Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
    Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
    to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    Now re-run Combo and attach the log.

    Thank you so much for all your help! We're seeing improvements for sure--no weird second user, the firewall is staying on, and symantec is no longer popping up messages about infostealer.gampass. The only remaining symptom is that our Symantec program still turns off for a second on rebooting, but I don't know if that's to do with a virus or something else.

    I followed your instructions and received a success message.

    I've attached the log!

    Thanks again!

    Your logs are clean. I do not use symnatec, so I cant comment on it turning off on reboots, but as long as it stays enabled it should be fine.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They are useful as backup scanners. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)

    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Thank you so much for your help! I can't tell you how much we appreciate it!!!

    The world is right again!!:-D

    Just one last thing...since I followed the instructions and uninstalled combofix and MGTools, my Symantec is popping up a message that it is trying to install something every time I open it--that's only a problem because we are no longer connected to the network we installed it from. Any ideas what happened?

    Thanks again!

    If you were on a network that ran the updates for each computer on that network for symnatec, then it is telling you it probably cant find the files. You need to post in the software forum to try to hash this out.

    And you are most welcome.
