I have an HP running Windows XP with a cd burner built in, and an external dvd burner. Recently both have been giving me the "Please insert disk" message whenever I click on them, even though there are disks in them. I haven't upgraded or anything lately, but I've tried uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling. My device manager seems to think everything is fine with both devices.

The only thing that I've done differently lately is that I connected a new iPod, which it didn't recognize. It also quit recognizing my old iPod since I did that... haven't figured that out yet, but I did download a music rescue program... haven't tried using it yet.

Any ideas how to get this thing to see the disks?? Maybe the heads are just dirty??

I would try a cleaning disc
always start with the most likely / easiest thing first
it is a bit coincidental that both would do it at the same time
but you may have put the same dirty disc into both

    good luck

This problem seems to crop up a lot.
One of Microsofts updates did cause a problem like this and they provided a fix.-Go to microsoft downloads.
    or, you can try:
Opening Device Manager and then open IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, right click the first entry (the Controller) and select uninstall, click ok, then reboot. Windows should then find a new device and install the drivers.

I did offer this to others, with some, but, limited success. You can also try putting yor xp disc in , and >run ->sfc /scannow.
This can take some time, and you will need to keep pressing retry, as Windows replaces faulty files/ drivers.

That seemed to do it! The computer won't reinstall that driver, but the cd's are showing up! Thanks!!
