thanks for reading. I recently did a reformat and everything was working good. I did all the basic tweaks in windows, and now I am having a problem I have never experienced before. I use DSL, and now, when I try to connect to the Internet, I cannot open web pages. I connect fine, I can get on line. When I try to open a page I get the white screen "Page cannot be displayed". It was working before I tweaked some services in XP Pro. I went back, changed all the services back that I changed, I still have the problem. Anybody have any clue what is causing me this problem? I have a feeling it is something simple, and I don't want to reformat again.. thanks.

kinda simple but have you checked to see if your browser is set to "work offline" ???? that can cause the same thing.

this sounds eerily like a DNS issue. It sounds like your DNS entries for the DNS server for your ISP are set properly. In this scenario, you would be able to connect but would not be able to pull up a page.

this is the url to Major Geeks in it's IP form. If you can pull this up then you have a DNS issue and must configure your entries for your ISP's DNS servers..

    click it now..

Kodo, and everyone else, thanks for the help

I can pull up that link fine. It is the majorgeeks main page. You are saying I should not be able to open that link? How can I configure my ISP's DNS servers??

right click my network places. then right click and choose properties on your network connection in question..
then take a look at the picture.

if your DNS setting is set to automatic and you're havng this problem then you need to manually set the DNS entries. If you don't have the entries to set then you'll need to contact your ISP to find out what they are. But typically, you should not have to.

by chance are you running a router?

    Kodo ,

no I am not running a router or anything like that. The problem has subsided for now, but it seems to come back randomly. I will check in my network connections later, thanks.
