OS is XP Home SP3 on a Dell Vostro laptop. I have been using PC Tools Firewall Plus, but it is no longer supported as a standalone application. I have no interest in purchasing PC Tools Internet Security. What would you folks recommend for a firewall (free) to replace PC Tools?

I am very conservative and careful in my web surfing. In 15 years of using PCs, I have never had a virus or any other infection. Would XP's built-in firewall be enough for me?

I use Windows built in firewall on one XP computer and my windows 7 computer. On the other XP computers and the 2K computers, I use a very old version of Zone Alarm, when it was just a firewall.

    Go here http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=44525
and scroll down to the firewall section. You'll see some recommendations, if you feel you want more than XP's built in firewall.

    I was looking at Tinywall

but the newest version doesn't work on XP and you need to install .NET framework (I try and have the bare minimum .NET versions installed so I don't have to keep patching).

I was in the same position about a year ago and I chose Privatefirewall

Be sure to read the Product Tour

I think you'll find this earlier discussion helpful.

Thanks for the replies. I have used Comodo in the past and really didn't care for it. And Zonealarm until it became bloatware. I've never heard of Privatefirewall but will check it out. Also heard good things about Online Armor, so will check that out as well.

For whatever it's worth, I used to use Online Armor with Windows XP and eventually had to remove it because it rather badly
interfered with online communication. That's when I switched to PC Tools Firewall, which worked well.

O.A. might work well for you.

Thanks for the heads up on Online Armor. I did take the product tour of Privatefirewall; it seems to be way more than I think I need. That's why I ditched Comodo. Simply too complicated and "naggy."

    Greetings, md2lgyk...

My $.02 - I think the best firewall is your following statement:

I've been using personal computers since the early Commodores and Tandys and have never felt the need for any 3rd-party firewall software. The Windows protection has always sufficed because, like you, my surfing habits don't put me in a position to need extra barriers.

The vast majority of the machines that I work on every day, computers that normal people use, have no extra firewall software. They seem to do just fine.
