I am desperately trying to clean up my PC. I have run all of the READ THIS FIRST processes and have included 3 scan logs for review. Please advise how to proceed.

    Thanks...

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

You did not follow the directions in step 7 of the READ ME properly. You are using MSconfig to control startups and we clearly requested that you not do this.

I see signs of both McAfee (look partially broken) and Symantec (looks almost completely broken). Is McAfee what you use now and does it work properly?

Make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = about:blank
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {87766247-311C-43B4-8499-3D5FEC94A183} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D7942484F} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: NAV Helper - {BDF3E430-B101-42AD-A544-FADC6B084872} - C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton AntiVirus\NavShExt.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {E1412445-4FF8-410e-8D24-F2CF86B171A4} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {F9D108C1-960D-9AAB-2353-EE5B572961C6} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: Norton AntiVirus - {42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6} - C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton AntiVirus\NavShExt.dll (file missing)
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {2CDE1A7D-A478-4291-BF31-E1B4C16F92EB} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Upsfc] C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\app72E.tmp
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Nsv] C:\WINDOWS\System32\nsvsvc\nsvsvc.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sm] C:\WINDOWS\sa_exe.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [firewall_anti] C:\WINDOWS\firewall_anti.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [eltupt] C:\WINDOWS\eltupt.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfig] C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe /auto
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ssgrate.exe] C:\WINDOWS\System32\wintems.exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:
    C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks
    c:\program files\Lycos <--- delete this folder
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp <-- delete all files in this folder except ones from the current day
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\nsvsvc <--- delete this folder
    C:\WINDOWS\sa_exe.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\firewall_anti.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\eltupt.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\wintems.exe
If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.

Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.
Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST).

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.
Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now.

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

Thanks for your help so far. I guess I misunderstood the READ ME instructions #7, hopefully it didn't set us back too far.
I ran HJT and deleted the files as instructed.
In safe mode, I could not find the following files to delete:
    C:\Program FIles\Norton System Works
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\nsvsvc
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\wintems.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\sa_exe.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\firewall_anti.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\eltupt.exe

Ccleaner would not run in Safe Mode, so I followed the remaining instructions and rebooted in normal mode. I ran Ccleaner, re-booted and ran HJT. The latest log is attached. Let me know what else to do.

    Thanks again...

Your log is clean. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to go back to step 1 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points. Then reboot and enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

After that, you should work thru the below link:

Thanks for your help. I'm not sure I'm clean because I'm having difficulty with my wife's account. Whenever she logs in and goes to Internet Explorer, she cannot get a cursor and can't enter any text. Any idea what this could be?

The reason I uncovered these problems in the first place is that I cannot properly install iTunes to get her new iPod hooked up under her login. I tried to create a dummy login just for her ipod, but the same problems come up with the new user. I also just re-loaded mcafee and when her account comes up, there are error messages that pop up saying that some components are missing. Any idea what could be impeding these installations.

Thanks again - you guys are a godsend!

Whose user account did we just work on? If not your wives, attach a HijackThis log after you reboot and login as her (do not use switchusers!! Reboot and login as her from scratch.)

If you had problems installing iTunres in a new user account, you probably are not having malware problems.

McAfee should be installed via an administrator account and it should be usable by everyone but only the admininstrator can install updates.

Here is the hjt scan that was run off her account. McAfee was loaded off my user account, as the admin. Since I have tried installing software through her account (i.e. - iTunes), I thought I gave her admin priveledges as well. Let me know how to proceed.

    Thanks...
