Please help me. Yesterday I noticed that my IP address mysteriously changed although I'm not using a proxy. Stranger still, "what's my ip?" sites all show the correct ISP, but I don't live in the state that shows up.

I checked my network settings on the browsers I use. No proxy settings, but I still see the new out-of-state IP

Will reinstalling my OS fix it or is there more to it?

    Thanks.

    Hi

Did you know your IP beforehand?
What can happen and mine is the same is that my ISP base, or local routing servers is not where I live so an IP check shows me 100 miles from where I live, this is normal in some instances, but if you are worried then follow the info below and have your PC checked for malware

I agree with JoeRay12 there likely is no need to re-install your OS (Windows)

I went to one site and it listed my "location" 130 miles NW from where I actually am located. Sometimes, I'm told I'm about 90 miles SW of my actual location. It is not worth getting upset about.

Thanks everyone. I just thought and still think it's odd that it looks like I live more than 500 miles away all of the sudden. So far my computer is performing the same, so maybe I am making a mountain out of a molehill.

Don't feel bad. I'm currently being shown in two different places at once. One IP locater shows me in San Francisco, CA(over 2000 mi away). A different IP locater shows me just north east of Wichita, KS(over 700 mi away). Same IP address though.:)

It seems to be a worldwide issue. My location is 500 miles from where I live.

Think of it as a blessing, would you want your location being permanently tracked? Our smartphones already know where we are to within a few yards, just gotta hope it isn't all being recorded :eek

I have not checked otherwise but I keep a Facebook Account to keep up with family and friends in far places and it has said for years that I am in a town in Texas which is at least 900 miles or more away from here.
