Hi, thanks in advance for your help.

I think my computer has been cleaned of malware but I would appreciate if an expert eye could take a look to confirm as my entire family uses this computer to do our finances.

Back story: a few days ago, the computer became infected with virtumonde. I think I was able to remove it with my AV and Spybot, but just to be sure (due to the aforementioned reason, I am paranoid), I decided to restore my system to factory defaults using the restore CD I received with computer purchase. I've done this 3 times now, as each time I do it, my AV detects 2 trojans in my System Volume Information. They always start with A000####.dll (the last four digits are different each time). This last time, I thought maybe my backup personal files in my USB drive were infected, so I did not connect this drive to my computer as yet. After the factory restore, I updated my AV, downloaded my firewall from CNET, and updated XP. A full scan with my AV after this came back fine. Then I downloaded MBAM, SAS, Spybot, and Spywareblaster and ran them (from this site or cnet; I followed all the advice on your how to protect your computer thread after the last infection!) full scans, everything came back fine. Then I disconnected my internet, went to run some errands, came back and Symantec had found the 2 trojans in the System Volume Information. So now I have 2 questions:

    1. Why may this be happening? Is Symantec giving me a false positive or is the infection recurring somehow because of what I am doing? I've only been to this site and cnet since the restore and only downloaded the above programs.

    2. Do my logs indicated that my system is clean now? all my scans came back OK.

    Thanks very much!

I am not seeing any problems on your system. You can only remove infected system restore points by toggling system restore. You can do that by following the below:

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real-time protection. They are useful as backup scanners. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures ian step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore ato create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Fantastic! Thanks a million for your time. I just had 2 quick follow-up questions before going through the final steps:

I already ran the autorun disable patch from your "how to protect your computer" post before. Is it safe to attach and scan my USB flash drive now?

Comodo Firewall keeps blocking a file C:\Windows\system32\instw.exe, but is this is a legitimate Computrace Plus file? I couldn't find a definitive answer by searching google.

    Thanks much again!

I don't believe it is malware but rather something related to your modem? If everything else is fine, then just keep allowing it to be blocked. And yes, you should be able to now run AV and AS programs on your thumb drive.

Everything seems to be running OK, I've been blocking that exe. All the uninstalls well fine.

Thank you so much for all your help! You guys rock!
