I run Windows Xp pro with SP2. .Net Framework 3.5. I recently downloaded a registry cleaner. After running it it found 2400 files with error which it suggested to be fixed. After the so called fixed my computer is operating badly. I restored the bad files but the computer is still operating in degraded way.

The Search box (Find files & folders )in Start is gone
Installshield wont work, Restore doesnt go back before the Fix Errors date.To name just a few of the faults. I know things will have to be done one at a time, so here is the first one.

I tried to start Flightsim manager, but got a User Advisory message:
"All the required components are not Registered.Trying to Auto register".
Even after re-installing the program I still get the message. Can anyone please help me.

Thanks a lot for the timely reply with a solution. I should have known better, anyway I will work on this problem with the suggestion u give.At least the computer starts ok, still have internent & some programs still run ok. Iam not too savvy with the complex processes of computers but know enough for basics. Its worth a try, will let u know how it turns out. Thanks a million.

One thing about registry cleaners: they rarely increase performance, and even more rarely do they fix problems in the PC. They are more likely to have no effect at all, or to cause problems (as you discovered). All reg cleaners are not created equal. Many are borderline malware/adware, and others are what I call "scam-ware" where they install and run OK, they provide a HUGE list of errors and then demand a payment to "fix" your PC. BEWARE!!! All the hype that we've all heard about how registry cleaners will 'boost performance and add to system stability and will prevent crashes' is just that... it's hype. Yes, it's true, if you install and uninstall lots of software on a regular basis, then running the occasional reg cleaner (a safe one like CCleaner; mentioned earlier by Mark Trent) is a good idea, but it's more for peace-of-mind and to prevent the registry from getting full of useless entries. The useless entries do not impact performance, however. If they do, it's really not noticeable unless it's an EXTREME situation. Personally, I think a registry defrag tool will help increase performance more than a cleaner will. A great guide to general PC maintenance can be at this link.

System 'tweakers' and Windows 'optimizers' are another area of potentially damaging programs, and really shouldn't be used by those who aren't really sure of what it is they are 'tweaking' and 'optimizing'. Be sure to ALWAYS set restore points when using these types of apps (reg cleaners too). The better apps will have the option to restore everything back to system defaults with one click, plus they will usually have a warning that will ask if you want to create a restore point before applying all the changes (this applies to reg cleaners too).

Thanks for the info, most of the problems I have had were minor ones I could correct myself therefore had a false sense of confidence, now I got the big one and Iam like a fish out of the water. I had thought only the hard drive could be defrag. This registry defrag sounds scary, considering my recent experience. Always good to learn something new from the right place, Thanks a lot.
