You can go round ad infinitum with that kind of thinking (refer to #43), I'm back to helping people. It that cannot be proved or disproved I shall leave to it's own devices and continue to boil missionaries as and when they turn up on my cavestep.

Yea, BUT, I think they have found Bertrand Russell's teapot and it's not between Earth and Mars,
it's in the asteroid belt and it's called Ceres. LOL

What I call pseudo-logic pops up all the time - some people seem to love it.
They have no idea of what a syllogism is.
Oh, yea, I think I saw one of those at the science fair.

I took a course in logic when I was in college and although I have since forgotten most of the technical stuff,
I find it really funny sometimes to hear what some people present as a logical argument.

Sometimes I'll watch a documentary about the evolution of Christianity and Judaism and it's dizzying to keep track of all the twists and turns.

Fortunately, with continuing excavation and study, many old myths and misconceptions are slowly being dissolved.

I'll end the argument in one sentence.

There is no proof either way and so that fact simply means everything is nothing more than opinion.

OT, but just out of curiosity, in the UK, does the 'vertically challenged one with a tooth fetish' subtract a VAT when they take a tooth? :-D

I think it is good that it is vertically challenged. If it was the 'vertically under challenged' one, it might come in, punch you several times in the jaw, take those teeth, and just leave you with the one under the pillow. ;)

My "Tone" was scholarly, i never said I personally do or do not have proof either way.

And duh, chick. What kind of dude would call himself "Wenchie"? Srsly.

Besides, no one has any proof God exists or does not. All they have is unanswered questions, and just because you don't know the answer to a question does not mean it doesn't HAVE one. It just means you don't know.

And if God does exist, which God is it? Is it God as man has come to define him, or is it a state of being called God for lack of a better term? Does this entity actually interfere in the lives of man or is man looking to draw conclusions of heavenly intervention to cope with an otherwise unfair and unkind state of being known as life? Is there an after life? If there is, does that mean you're with God? Is there really a heaven? Is there really a hell?

You can't possibly prove one way or another unless/until you DIE, at which point you can't fill in the rest of us, so even though you may have the answer, those of us still alive and well do not. It's a cycle...

I personally don't believe in God as man defines him, but there is definitely an unexplained "why" to what actually began "life". What made that primordial ooze grow cells, split, and evolve. If that unanswered 'why' is 'God' then I believe there is God. I also believe someone will find an answer someday beyond my lifetime at which point God will have a name and then be science.

But nobody has to share my faith. I didn't ask them to, and I don't belittle them their belief. Believing there is more and better out there is sometimes the only thing that keeps people going. They call it God, I call it hope. And why the hell would I want to tell anyone they should not have hope? That's just mean.

Good debate going. I'm glad it has been kept civil. It's come close to an inflamed argument but hasn't. I don't feel the need to get involved other than saying I'm enjoying reading the back-and-forth.

Just like the original topic which was the "Spring Spheres", doesn't bother me that someone tried to change the name of Easter Eggs and how people were angry about it. It's just interesting to read about.

Well Bill thats just as crazy as banning Baa Baa Black Sheep from schools! and calling it Ba Ba Rainbow Sheep, is the Rainbow colours not an enblem of the Gay&Lesbian comminity, so it then is no different.

We will have radio shows that will only play instrumental music soon, so long as the PC Police have checked and vetted the title first.

  9. collinsl

    collinsl MajorGeek

But instrumental music could be construed as non-PC if a particular culture of music that is considered insulting to other cultures is played, or if the music fails to include or fails to omit a particular style of music. Thus all music styles must be incorporated into a piece of music otherwise it is avoiding or omitting a culture(s) and is thus non-PC. However, care must be taken to avoid any types of music considered insulting to anyone, so in fact, as all types of music are insulting to someone, you would be better off not playing music at all.

Well collinsl I have to agree with your perfect explanation and sadly thats how all of this is turning out, need to cover all ethnicities in TV and Films (even if the genre is inconstant), your workplace needs to know, not that it means you can do the job properly.

I want a global world, free speech and all that, but PC is causing more issues than the interest groups that advocate it are aware of, it will bite them in the *** at some point.

  12. Nedlamar

    Nedlamar MajorGeek

I agree, like I said it is having the adverse affect.
Take the bah bah Black sheep song for example, now this is just a theory but it's entirely possible that stopping kids from singing this song will draw attention to previously unnoticed black kids, before the PC drama of the song they were just "kids"..... but because of the political correctness drawing attention to the "fact" thats it's wrong because there are black kids in the school.... they are now "Black kids"
So the PC is what actually labeled them.

This is what these idiots don't understand, I've heard people say it, some PC rule comes in about black or asian people or some such and as a result those white guys who have a small unvoiced racial opinion are now annoyed at the entire race for complaining about something so trivial.

So as a white male, I want these titles changed in the name of PC.

The Great White shark = Is racist because it shows whites as brainless, agressive fish.

May all your xmas's be white = This song suggests whites are racist and don't want any other race involved in their holiday celebrations.

The phrase "White Out" (from blowing snow) = This suggests whites are a hinderence to drivers.

Etc etc, see this is all stupid, the argument however ridiculous works both ways, but the funny thing is a white guy is not allowed to say such thing because for some unknown reason.... it makes them racist to do so.

    go figure.

Ned, superb post and I agree, and when I was in school in the 70/80s we did have an Asian and Afro-Caribbean families children in our junior and secondary school (actually good friends of mine) and we sang those types of nursery rhymes and called a blackboard a blackboard as duh it was strangely black in colour, I did not see them upset or PC evident, that was in a time when we where all more tolerant to each other and just "got on" with life.

Now what do you do when you wish to paint your house a black colour and PC has gone amok, go into the hardware store and go to the sales person (see me PC and not picking on gender specifics) do you have any ... mmmm.. ahhhh.. that, *ponder* uummmmm errrrrr at this point the sales person's eyes have glazed over and thinking of calling the cops for this nutter (don't know if I can say that) standing in front of them when you suddenly remember PANTONE 433C and ask for that.

There are limits to causing offense with comments and that should be upheld, but there is also common sense in these matters of PC.

I work in an industry and building that my colleagues are from all corners of the globe and they also think this PC thing is gone too far, so who has caused it?

The answer is simple David, it all these non jobsworths who are paid vast sums of money to invent regulations that impede the way we treat others, no doubt there are a few non jobs at your place of work??? (not yours incidentally)

I was at school in the 50/60s when there was no such thing as PC and we all got along famously when we were able to read stories such as "Ten little ******* and Uncle toms cabin which also used that N word, alas not any more.

Has anyone considered that controlling freedom of thought, speech and actions, which is what so-called political correctness is in reality is one of the most extreme discriminatory and offensive actions in itself. That's what it's all about - nothing less than a blatant assault on our most basic freedoms. It never ceases to amaze me that most people just go on allowing it. It's all about control and one minority sector, (whatever it may be), gaining control at everyone else's expense.
Anyone has me up on some trumped up anti-P.C. charge can expect to be sued for victimization and stress, themselves.
Whereas I agree that it is somewhat amusing in its extreme form, but after a while it gets old real fast and ceases to become funny anymore. Just seems to be classical human socio-behaviour that public consensus goes from anything goes in the 40's and 50's era to a tiny minority being able to pull the reins on the vast majority. Human behaviour doesn't seem to have a happy medium very often.

I'm not sure what you're asking, because you haven't said anything relevent or useful and just keep asking the same question over and over. You have no proof of anything yay or nay, and I've pretty much made the point I intended to make. So you either take it or leave it because obviously you aren't reading and can't form an articulate reply.

Did you see how they're intending to censor the entire book "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" to remove the words N----er and Injun? That's disgusting, the whole point of using those words is to put the prevalent views of the day into context of this one white boy coming to terms with the fact that slaves are actually people too.

Well Barry that would be the slippy slope to 1984 and Fahrenheit 451 realities.

I guess as I was typing your post ties in with my text above. I just don't get where PC advocacy groups and in part our politicians have the right to change original literature, it was fact at the time of the writings that words like that where used, Indians called the British and French troops in the US the "white man" don't think we took offense, well apart from the damn big axes they where hurling at us, but are we then going to re-write history, DAMN HOPE NOT.

Scholarly or not, you made an absolute statement about religion being invented by man and that hell is not a real place. When you make an absolute statement presumably, you have proof, or one should have proof. Otherwise, it might be best to say, in my opinion, then state whatever it is.

Didn't honestly know...if you don't know, ask right?

Again, an absolute statement. So you have proof that no one can produce proof of His existence?

now this is better...you are asking speculative questions, albeit after absolute statements declaring the non-existence of G-d.

Another absolute statement...What would you say that G-d's existence can be proven, but much like the people who thought the Earth was flat, despite the evidence that it was round, you still have to decide to accept it or not.

You contradict yourself several times....first you don't believe, then you believe, but don't, unless someone proves it through science then you'll call it what you only believe already...your church is science. You cannot say that you believe and don't believe. That's being wishy washy. No offense, just my opinion.

G-d is Hope. Hope didn't just spring up out of someone's imagination. Like all things, it has an origin.

Oh dear... Bill the Daily Mail is on form today, now there's a job that should be banned "animal ethicists" by law, some academics go through life dreaming up these things and get paid a good wage for either stating the obvious or things that are unlikely to in this case have the animals or companions going the the High Court and suing humanity.

I have this weird ritual in work each day in looking at a few news agencies and finding the most useless research findings ever! example HERE mmmmmm HONESTLY some hunted at night and some by day!

It's ok, you can still call them "Cops" :-D

As for the other, you know what, last year there was a lad working with me, he is Black (I hope that doesn't offend I honestly don't know the "Correct" word any more), he is a hard worker, a member of the Canadian Artillery through the summer months. We had such a laugh all the time, lots of simple joking around and you know what?... I called him several offensive names as he did to me, all in jest. We tried to invent the most offensive thing we could think of to say to each other and we both had many laughs. But the difference in our ancestry brought us closer by mocking those who apparently want it closer.

Also when I go to the supermarket in town I get black forest ham, but if certain people are working I will ask for "African American ham" just for a laugh, no offense meant in any way shape or form, a simple joke.

In fact with my many condescending comments over the years to many walks of life and people, I don't ever recall actually offending a single person, unless I wanted to and if that was the case I would verbally attack the persons personality or some such. When ever I WANT to offend I would never stoop to racial or religious slurs.

I say get rid of PC and let the evolved people of the 21st century simply live , give us back freedom of speech and let each country, race, religion or creed, worship, celebrate or sing about whatever the feck it likes.

    Here endeth the lesson.

PC sucks. If someone personally tells you something offends them, quit saying it to/around that person. Don't eradicate it from all existence. That's just dumb, and who the hell thinks that they're so important? Cus, I'll tell them otherwise.

Where I work, All got a mailing of the correct way to avoid any "hurt feelings" on talking to co-workers. Believe it or not. If I tell-say something that might be offensive. Others have to report me or I have to report myself. This included race, religion, gender, eccettra-excettra. You name it, it was included.

I can see the company dosen't want lawsuits and understand. I work with many diffrent ppl. My thoughts are you always respect a persons beliefs. No matter how wacked I think they are. You believe in what you believe, I believe in what I believe. As long as you don't try to shove your beliefes on me. I won't try to shove mine on you.

Then the lawyers kick in. Law-suits and why the letter. Understand this.

My thinking. To justify your job, political-lawyer, ect. You have to come up with an idea.
Your in your cube, looking at the monitor. Only other thing you have to play with requires soap. Looking at the soap, you get an idea!!! Lets implement it!!! By golly. See? I justified my job as I'm doing something on some knob that had an issue with something.

I think someone touched on it in a previous post but i can't see the post,Dave I think? But I wanna mention a place I know where PC and fear of lawsuits has divided the company.

There's a company I know which will go nameless which has dealt with a few complaints regarding jokes, the jokes told by men and the complaints made by women.

The effect its had on the company is quite profound, the company is now split down the middle with men on one side and women on the other,on business trips the women stay in a different a different hotel or in a separate part of the hotel, rarely do men and women chat around the water cooler any more, men and women now go for lunch separately, men and women are urged not to go out drinking together. So it has had the completely opposite effect in this instance and I know for a fact it has stopped women getting promotions or being treated as a fellow work colleague due to the unease felt by management.

This is blatant sexual discrimination and it's been caused by political correctness,I think you can only stomach so much of the day without blurting out racy joke to ease some tension, for me its about 30 seconds in the morning:-D

Oh we have the same, had to (not an option we have to) as I mentioned earlier do a training course on Equality and Diversity, but to expand on this and your mention of emails, ours goes one step further as the email servers have a word filter on them to pick out any words that are in that type of genre to be offensive, now comes the daft bit we are a medical facility and forget me if I'm wrong here but, some emails may have parts of the body mentioned in them or equipment (we have an device called a Slit Lamp and that email was filtered and given to the IT police for investigation).

So not only can these types of political correctness if handled by a computer get an employee into serious trouble they can have a negative effect in which you are scared to type anything, I know a few folk who wont use the internet for fear of searching for something.

There are degrees to this PC thing and we are way way over what is needed.

Indeed Rikky that is what this has caused a negative effect of dividing people, so what was though of as a good idea to stop what was in essence racial and sexual issues has exploded into most things possibly being taken the wrong way inadvertently.

  35. Wenchie

    Wenchie I R teh brat

I can see how some of the things PC tried to do were to protect certain groups from hostility, like sexual harassment or racism in the workplace. But it goes from common sense "people hate this" stuff, (like don't goose a coworker), to "you are not allowed to have conversations with other people about 'could be offensive to somebody' things because someone MIGHT hear you and be offended". I think if you're telling a coworker a dirty joke, in a closed cubicle and not involving any specific person, you should be allowed to do it, dammit. Sally prude in the next cube should learn not to eaves drop and as long as she's treated with respect in direct conversation and given equal treatment in all things work related, she should just get the hell over it.
