Poor Educational system

A freind of mine has been going to a private school to be a Hygenist for Dental. She's 23 and very intelligent.
She asked me if I would go with her as a Victim (thats what I call it lol) for her to complete a class.
She's at the end of her course, I went, she examined my teeth etc and I was impressed.
She's completed all course work and has done perfectly good enough work to pass.
Yesterday she was told she wont pass.
    The reason for this?

Not enough time in class with subjects.

Why did she not have enough time in class?

Because she simply couldn't find enough volunteers, many who said they would , let her down at the last minute.

I'm sorry but thats bull, she failed because she couldn't find enough people to be victims.

If I wanted to be a mechanic and I had to rebuild 10 engines, I'm pretty sure the engines would be supplied.

She's also run into some issues with some of the teachers, things like only giving her 1 slot of time when others get 4. Only giving her 24 hours notice to when her next class is.
They've just told her that on Friday she has to complete 4 slots, aparently this is not physically possible since each one takes approx 3 hours and the place is only open for 8 hours.
Coupled with the fact they will only give her 2 slots on Friday.

I mean come on, she's $40,000 in debt because of this and has nothing to show for it, her credits cannot pass over to any other school so she either has to bite the 40K and try something else or pay another $10k to repeat the course.

Way to help people better themselves.

Sounds to me they're wanting her to pay the other $10k, i wonder how many other students they've done this to, lets face it at $10k for a second chance you only need 10 students and thats a lot a money !

Oh aparently there's a small handful of students in her course experiencing the same issues.

Funny thing is she told them 2 months ago she was having major problems finding subjects and they basically said not to worry. Last week they start in with the "So how come you havn't found enough subjects"

It's bull man, I feel so bad for her but there's bugger all I can do.

I told her to go for it again, swallow her pride, get the ticket and then let everyone in the trade know what this school is like.

She's a mother of a 2y/o girl, her husband is trying to get aprentiship as a millwright and they are struggling with minimum wage jobs.

Money grabbers suck the life out of society and are part of the reason people are struggling finacially in life.

Like to be a Secretary earning $11 per hour, you need a University degree.... I mean what the hell is that?
$10-20k on a degree that earns you $11 per hour? ya'ok.

Well, I know over here, all the public Dental Clinics have signs up, stating that you will be worked on buy students. Basically, if you want the subsidized dental treatment, then you ave to accept that students will most likely be doing the work. They still have the fully qualified Dentists for the difficult jobs, but the students get their practice mainly at the public clinics and Dental Hospitals.

Exactly how it should be, students shouldn't have to find their own victims.
I could understand if you were simply working for free and the course is costing you little money. But when you pay $40k for a years course, everything should be supplied.

Question though... you have lots of dentists in the Jungle? :-D

Something similar happened to me with my Grad studies. I had to put in something like 80 hours of observation in a high school (nightmare!) and the teacher had to evaluate me... observing? Anyway, the teacher I was observing not only didn't like the fact that I was in her class, but went out of her way to keep me uninvolved. She made me fill out my own evaluation which I wasn't supposed to do. Anyway, I don't know what she sent in but the teacher failed me even though I had gotten straight As on all of my assignments and exams. It is funny to be taught to care about your students by a teacher that does the exact opposite. Needless to say, when he said I could do another observation to pass he suddenly dropped out of existence and never contacted me again. Not only did he fail me, but he kept me from the only chance I had at fixing it.
I was schooled mostly in Italy, and your grades are based on your class work. They don't do any hands on training there, which in my opinion kinda sucks. It is good to get the experience, but of course, you shouldn't fail because you were unable to find people to cooperate. It isn't like you can force someone to let you train on them. Sad.
Isn't there anything that she can do since she's a mother of such a young child? I mean, it isn't fair at all to treat someone like that. There should be accommodations for her. I've noticed though that when there is money involved, private schools and even some departments at Universities do their best at trying to milk you for all you have, and then some.
I hope things work out in the end for her. You would think that once you pay for education it becomes your right to get credit for it. It isn't like she doesn't know what she is doing. Well, I wish her luck!

Thats exactly it, fair enough if you simply suck at it then you should fail. If you constantly cut or prick people then you should do something else.

But she's now operated on 42 people and not made one mistake, given they use sharpe pointy instruments thats not bad going.
She needed 46 people and not allowed to use Family.
When the Teacher evaluated her assesment of me she only dissagreed with 2 things, both were minor and she had scored one of them 3/5 in severity and the teacher said it was closer to 2/5 and another she had said something was Mild-Moderate and the teacher said it was just Mild.
So in both instances she went higher which IMO is better than going lower, then the teacher said "Very good, as usual"

So if one of the teachers says she's consistantly very good.........how can they fail her!!

    It just annoys me.

That's crazy. I would trust her more than some of the dentists I've been to, honestly. She's doing her best to become a dentist while some guy out there might have had a free and easy ride and doesn't know jack squat about dentistry. I've had dentists not even clean my teeth (I hadn't had them cleaned in a while) and he said nothing was wrong, so he polished them and sent me home! I came in for a CLEANING!
It is unavoidable, in my opinion, to not prick someone every now and then. Eventually she will have a steadier hand and it might happen very rarely if at all. It doesn't really matter, really. As long as the tools are sterilized (which they should be anyway) there is no problem. Well, I hope she presses on and tries to finish. Hopefully she won't be working her education off for the rest of her life, though. It is sad when proper education comes at such a high price. You would think people would pay her to be educated in a trade that is essential. :confused

Thats it, right there. My thoughts exactly.
This country is crying out for Doctors and Dentists and anyone in the medical feild.....yet no one can afford to take the tuition.

"We have a shortage of Doctors and Nurses"

Well you know what? make it more accessable to qualify and pay these people more money!!!
I know a Doctor who works 100+ hours per week, her yearly wage looks great on paper but when you work it out to an hourly rate it's less than a Plumber.
Then you have Hockey and Football players who simply provide entertainment and make an absolute fortune!

The whole system is messed up and it's not just Canada, it's the same pretty much anywhere.

You're right, though. I don't know how much doctors are paid in Canada, but the issue with education is the same. Are there any programs that help students pay for those kinds of studies? I know here in Nevada, a friend of mine managed to get some of her schooling for cheap. I'm not sure, but I also think some schools give incentives to people who join their medical programs.
I really think though that education should be a priority in a country. It needs to be accessible by everyone, in whatever way it can be done.

I'm not sure about financial help for education, I know there are some institutions in place but I don't know what the criteria is.

I myself am in a similar situation, I have nothing on paper to say I'm any good at anything. Yet I've done 5 year apreticships in Carpentry and 3 years in Bricklaying.
I'm good at my job by all acounts, never had any comebacks on work I've completed.
Yet I can't get a job here because some 20y/o who spent a year at school is more qualified than me.
This wasn't a problem when I lived in England because word of mouth was enough to get me plenty of work/jobs, but now here in Canada I don't know many people.
So anyway I want to change trades and get into something else, I want to take a course or courses to get qualified in something, but everything I fancy doing is waaaaaay out of my price range and/or requires too much time..... so while being educated how do I pay rent and feed my family?

    So frustrating.

That's how my college (tech school) was. I didn't need an ACT or SAT to enter, they just gave me an entrance exam that was no harder than 5th or 6th grade math.

Needless to say, about 60% didn't make to the second trimester, and another 50% of the remaining didn't make it to the third...

I know. I only have degrees in languages but you'd think I'd be able to get a better job than a high school dropout, right? Wrong. My last job involved a good amount of computer use and maintenance, and since it was in an airport, my languages helped, but I was the only employee there that had a college degree and actual computer experience. And now I'm unemployed because we went out of business. You might know what a Registered Traveler is. I used to work for one of the three, Clear, RTGo and some other one I forgot... but if you never heard of them well, I'm not surprised.
Not only that, but I paid into insurance that cut my paycheck almost in half and didn't pay for any of my routine checkups. So I guess working at the airport cost me more money than it paid! I only spent my money on utilities, rent, and gas... yet, I ended up working just for the heck of it? Not only that, but I had to be at work at 3am.
Also, about age, it is ridiculous to judge whether or not someone is capable by how old they are. I had a coworker that was in his late 70s and was a great and enthusiastic learner. Not once did he mess up during my training, but he was made to leave by being told he was too slow and implying he was too old. Are you serious? I've seen people fired for that reason. Or for not being pretty enough. No, really. What happened to hearing people based on merit? Why not try someone out for a day and let them prove their worth? I honestly get frustrated when I can't find a position at a job I know I can do and do better than many others. I am probably going to have to go get some of those pieces of paper just so I can prove I am who I say I am, such as certificates or, if I have to, another degree. It's my fault to some extent since I got a degree in Spanish... I don't want to teach. You know how they say life isn't fair? Well, I think it's an understatement.

Google might know of a few... ;)

In my town a bunch of churches went together to help parents of young children, mainly single parents but others as well, to get through getting an education so they can move on to something bigger and better. They don't have the funds to pay tuition fees, so what they do instead is arrange for free child care during classes and study hours, people donate their old cars, clothes, and so on, and anything that can help so the person who has to pay a fortune for classes at least won't have to shell out a similar fortune for a car that can take them there and a bed for the baby. Especially for single mothers, the free day care is a great help.

It's getting pretty volatile in California, protests breaking out throughout the state yesterday, maybe across the country.

LOS ANGELES (AFP) – Students clashed with baton-wielding police as thousands took to the streets across California in mostly peaceful protests against cuts in education spending.

Well new news last night, I got a phone call from said friend.......aparenly her and her mother went in storming, her mother being one of those very nice, fun ladies all of 5'2" that you would not want to get on the wrong side of :-D

And the outcome is that they have granted her enough time slots to finish her course :strong

Very happy for her and this means after my torture of assessing my teeth I now get my free cleaning :-D

Haha. Yeah, my mom is one of those, but she's not even 5 foot! She got me out of the one and only overdraft fee I ever had (because the guy at the register said that you can't overdraft on debit card purchases) for books, and she called the bank and chewed their ears off bloody.
Woo! It's sad thought, that people always have to be firm and intimidating in order to not be taken advantage of. It's like, being nice and agreeable won't protect you from the unscrupulous. I knew someone who's mother had a repair man fix something in the house and charged her an exorbitant amount and her mother didn't say anything because she didn't want to be rude. Needless to say, her daughter isn't as forgiving and ran them out of business.
Being able to be aggressive is a necessary skill these days. Well, anyway, hurrah!

I read this far, and I knew exactly how it was going to end.... LOL My mother is about 5'2", cheerful, sweet, with the warmest and most generous heart I have ever seen. And God help the poor bastard who makes her angry...

:-D yeah my mum is the same, I remember watching her wag her finger very violently at a guy who stood easy 6'5" (given he was taller than me at 6'3") and she could barely reach his face to wag said finger in :-D
He had shouted at mums dog (our dog) for going near his garden, not on it...near it and mum told him to....ahem.... "Be quiet" lol
