I am curious. Why the pop up windows and bars in this forum for facebook, etc.? This is a new and in my opinion unwelcome addition to my visits to this outstanding forum. Just my two cents worth. I am very thankful to be a member here.

You are using Adblock Plus. Some of the popular subscription filters remove those. ;)

Sorry mjnc. I thought of that too, right after I posted. After reading your post I decided to try again with AdBlock Plus disabled. Results are the same with Opera.

I use Adblock Plus and it doesn't stop the two facebook popups....... Grrrr :mad

It would be good to opt out as I don't use Facebook or Twitter so why should I have two lots of links on my screen (left side and top right) for this social rubbish. The hide tabs leave arrows on the screen and so you just know it is still there lurking :mad

I see what looks like a NoScript icon in your screenshot.
Can't that also block those buttons?

There is a way, but I won't post the solution as that may not be much appreciated.
If you do some proper searching, you will find the answer.

There is a difference between minimising and closing and I am fully aware of the hide button rolleyes

In my case, I don't use facebook or twitter, so how does having these links on any forum pages that are open help to promote MG :confused

My point is that I can't opt out even though it is of no benefit to either MG or me and so I have to put up with useless crap whenever I am on forum pages :(

I have no issue for people having the two bars that find them useful but people should at least be given the option if as in my case it is of absolutely no use ;)

My reply was directed to hitest, not you. You can curb the attitude.

Just remember who you are blocking with these ad-blocking scripts.

You are playing with people's livelihoods.

Nobody wants to work for free, and few can afford to.

I won't be blocking this pop-up bar as it is for an excellent cause. I am very thankful for this forum and for the work that is done here.
I was just curious and my default reaction to any pop-up bar is instant suspicion. My apologies, folks.

I stopped, due to it was beginning to be nothing more then stuff like stupid criminals. I do word of mouth for this site, or when people are in trouble, point them here, then have them deal with one of the competitors, that begins with a B, ends with a r.com.

Between here and one other site, they are the only two that I send people to for malware cleaning. And no, it is not dslreports for that other site.

I don't really see the big deal, they aren't in the way blocking anything? :confused

I don't really use facebook or twitter (only for giveaways) but they don't really bother me.

No, because dslreports does not start with a B and end in r.com :-D

Agreed. They initially annoyed me, but then I remembered this: Every single website on the internet has share buttons/links for Twitter, Facebook, and every other social media channel out there. And then it occurred to me that I should be surprised that I haven't seen these buttons before on MGs. (I am also profoundly grateful that you chose to omit buttons for Google+, Pinterest, Spiceworks, LinkedIn, and all the other ones.)

Throwing a major hissy-fit here over the fact that the owners of this site are smart enough to use social media for free word-of-mouth marketing/PR is pointless and makes you look just a little bit out of touch with how the internet and reality in general works. Everyone does it. Everyone. MajorGeeks could stop doing it, I suppose. If they really wanted to. And if they really wanted to fall behind, and over time be replaced by other websites who was better at keeping up with online trends and using the powerful marketing tools that social media channels have become, and as a result gain a lot more traffic than MGs would. Personally, I wouldn't want that.

A lot of the moderators and admins here have links to the MG stores for software and swag in their forum signature for the same reason, to help MGs generate revenue. Are we going to complain about that next?

I did apologize for my lapse in judgement. I do know how the Internet works. I'm sorry I offended you. I do value this site a lot.

Mimsy, but thy are not in your face, taking up half of your Real Estate. There is a difference, in embedding them as a Share this link as a part of a post, or like the FacebookLike button, compared to the AddThis block, that is obtrusive, and makes you think that the site has Malware.

It can tend to scare people away, when you get these pop-overs or sliders, that you have to click first, before you can even do anything.

I know that, and I was not targeting you with my post. I apologize for coming across that way.

If you're incapable of doing anything on these forums without clicking on the sliders first, you need a browser that can keep up with the rest of the internet.

I've never done anything with these sliders/buttons/whatever-they-are, and that includes clicking on them to hide them, and as you can tell I obviously have no difficulties using the forums. You are either overly sensitive, or way behind the times in browser technology. Either way, since said sliders/buttons/whatever-they-are are not going away, whining less and adapting more would be a smart strategy for you.

Wow, quite a few buttons getting pushed around here. ;)

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

For what it's worth I've already used the "Email", "Print" and "Favorites" buttons.

Damn widget/thingy might come in handy if you give it a chance.

Ha! Somehow it doesn't surprise me that Rikky's 10K post was about bars and bikinis.

    Well played, sir! :wine

In case you haven't noticed, when you hover your mouse pointer over the buttons, a 'hide' button appears at the end.
Click the hide arrow and they're gone until you click the button again.
    Pretty cool. :cool

    Just tried the Facebook button.
Hadn't done anything on FB in sooo long, it didn't work until I changed some account settings.
