I have been working on my computer for weeks now trying to remove all the viruses and spyware, adware..etc. I have used Ad-aware, Spybot, and Norton Anti-virus 2003.

Today I found your site and I followed each step (exactly as it's written) to delete all this junk from my computer. However, I still have two major problems:
    1. When I set FireFox as my default browser in the control panel, it reverts back to IE automatically.
    2. I have popups gallore!! All from IE.

It's driving me completely nuts. I did the Hijack this scan and I the following is the log from that scan. Please help me.

Edit by chaslang: Unrequested inline log removed. Also HJT is being run improperly directly from the ZIP file.

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem:

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - DO NOT: run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - With not browsers opened have HijackThis fix the below items:

OK I had already done everything in the sticky as I had read before. Now I followed your directions.
I'm still having the same issues....bummer.

But I have attached my log file as instucted.

Also, I forgot to mention before that everytime I boot up a small window appears that simply says 'MSW' in the top and "an error occured' in the body, with only OK as an option. I don't know what it is or if it matters but I thought I'd tell you anyway.

    Thanks!

Remember the directions, no browsers should be running when using HijackThis. You have C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe running.

Limewire is know to contain forms of malware. You should uninstall it.

If you are using WinXP or WinMe, make sure you have system restore disabled (per the tutorial).
For all OS types, make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Please run HijackThis and click on the "Open the Misc Tools Section" button on the open page. Then select "Open process manager" on the left-hand side. Look for the following process (or processes) and one at a time kill them by selecting it and then click "Kill process". Then click yes.
    C:\windows\system32\rdxregst.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\jihsysi6.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\sysmonnt.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\jihsysi6.exe

After killing all the above processes, click "Back".

Then please click "Scan" and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://rotator.adjuggler.com/servlet/ajrotator/117283/0/viewHTML?zone=enternet

    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:

    C:\Program Files\52wlrivr <--- the whole folder
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\msw <--- the whole folder
    C:\windows\system32\rdxregst.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\jihsysi6.exe
    C:\windows\system32\msistor.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\sysmonnt
C:\windows\system32\eliteibz32.exe <-- also delete all other filenames beginning with elite and ending with exe in the system32 folder.

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.

Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST). Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:

    1) If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2) Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3) If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.

Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log. And tell us how things are working.

YAY!!!! You fixed it!!! Thank you so much.

I ran HJT again and posted the log just in case there is something there that you need to tell me about or something...I don't know. I am so excited.

When I rebooted I didn't see the stupid MSW window error thing and I didn't get one single popup!!!

btw I don't use IE because I'm told it can be a virus window so I use FoxFire now. That was a little scary at first because when you said to reset on IE I was scared...but it all worked out after re-start.

    So anyway, THANK YOU AGAIN!!

P.S. I'll talk to my family about uninstalling LimeWire...but that's gonna be a fight.

You're welcome! But you did not get it all fixed, repeat the steps for the below two lines:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [checkrun] C:\windows\system32\eliteibz32.exe
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

Make sure you delete the C:\windows\system32\eliteibz32.exe file in safe mode and make sure you do what I said last time.

For the Limewire program I suggested to uninstall, use the below for ammo. There are better alternatives (but I personally do not use any P2P programs).

Hmmm.... I had already deleted all the elite files...I see them on the log now that you pointed them out...but They are gone. I don't know what that means.

Here is the latest and (hopefully) last HJT log.

The only 'problems' I still have is that the idenity 'daddy' runs very slow. The others don't run near as slow as that one.

Also, under the start menu when I click set program access and defaults...it doesn't let me change my default browser to FireFox. It's ok though since it doesn't seem to run IE anymore.

Other than that things are good. I cannot uninstall LimeWire because the computer actually belongs to my brother and he loves that. So, I will just have to deal with the crap from it as it comes.

Okay, now your log is clean and you should complete the steps in the below thread to help keep it that way:

How to Protect yourself from malware!

Why don't you just set FIreFox to be your default browsers from within FireFox?
