    Hi,
    I have 3 symptoms:
    1) boot-up time takes 2 minutes. I ran bootviz and for 1 minute nothing happens. User sees the wall paper pop up but desktop icons take another 45 seconds to appear. (Not normal behavior) The computer continues to boot normally at that point is available for use shortly after that.
    2) at shutdown a window pops up for a tiny fraction of a second and I can't see what it says. I have tried to pause the shutdown, but it happens too fast.
    3) I got an error trying to update Java. It was at 6 release 17 and would not update to release 20. I got a Windows security error that would not allow it to be installed. I downloaded the java install and renamed it and it installed fine. Regedit and msconfig work fine as do Internet Explorer and Firefox. All relavent software is current.

Other than these symptoms the compuetr seems to run fine, but I am concerned that someting is hiding in the computer.
Processs explorer doesn't show anything strange. I followed read and run me first post. Attached are the requested logs. Any help is appreciated. There is no antivirus/firewall software installed at this time to make troubleshooting easier. Windows firewall is on.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Mike

    Hi,
While waiting for a reply I ran Sopho's Anti Rootkit. It found
    Sophos Anti-Rootkit

    Area: Windows registry
    Description: Hidden registry key
    Location: \HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18\Software\Avg
    Removable: No
    Notes: (no more detail available)

    Area: Windows registry
    Description: Hidden registry value
    Location: \HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\load
    Removable: No
    Notes: (type 1, length 2) " "

I think this is where my problem is. If so how can I correct this?

    Well -

I have a few questions that I need answers to:

Who installed Registry Mechanic? Was it part of some suite of software? If you used it to do any cleaning - what did you do? *It may be a good idea to un-do anything you did with it, and uninstall Registry Mechanic. (Many pc's have been broken by similar programs)

Is Spyware Doctor still installed? (There's a service for it still running) In fact, there are quite a few unexplainable services relating to PCTools in your logs.

    * A boot time of 2 minutes is great! What are you used to?

Registry Mechanic was installed by someone else quite some time ago. I have no other information on it. I suspect it was installd as a standalone program. Looking through Google it seemed safe to leave installed after I unstalled all the junk on the computer. Now I think it has to go. It has 58 automatic backups. It could take a while to restore all changes. I don't see where it was ever used manually. I am happy to restore all automatic backups, if necessary or just uninstall if needed. I see Indications of strange activity during my attempts to clean out junk the past couple of days.. There are references being backed up by Registry Mechanic to newXXX.tmp and newXXX.tmp.exe in a user profile that I don't have the password for. XXX being hexadecimal numbers. It looks like nothing manual was done with Registry Mechanic.

All PCTools software except Registry Mechanic has been uninstalled, so I'm happy to clean out whatever is left. Please point out what needs to be disabled/uninstalled and I will.

My concern is the wallpaper shows up on the monitor but it's 45 seconds to a minute before icons start showing up. Makes me concerned something is grabbing the computer before I get to use it.

Also the Sophos log I included makes me nervous.

Just now I noticed in Doc&Setings/administrator/local Settings/temp fiolder a file named zsfjvb.exe created yesterday at 4:30 pm. I did a find in regedit for this file name but it was negative. File is not locked as I can add an extenstion to it. Looks like some kind of malware activity.

To be specific, I have not used Registry Mechanic on this or anyn other computer before.

*WARNING: The following advice and fixes are specific to this member's problem and should be used for the issue(s) with this machine only.

Hello, MileRKaplin - please do not install any other software while we are still working with you unless instructed. Once we have given you the all clean and final instructions you will be free to install what you want.

I strongly recommend that you clean up this account's Desktop immediately leaving only links.[ C:\Documents and Settings\Daddyy\Desktop
] Do not store downloads, exe files, iso files....etc on your Desktop. First it is not a safe place to keep them (i.e., you may loose them due to malware, and a cluttered Desktop is an easy hiding place for malware), and last but not least - it can have an effect on your PCs performance.

    Step 1:
Please look in Add/Remove Programs for the following and uninstall if found. If you get any errors just make a note and continue on.
    Step 2:
Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Step 3:
Now we need to use ComboFix to remove some left-over files and folders from previously installed programs.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware, firewall...etc) programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. *Remember to re-start them before coming back online.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Step 4:
Delete all files and subfolders in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    Step 5:
Open CCleaner - select "Cleaner" > "Run Cleaner" <---use this function ONLY!

    Step 6:
Now install the latest Sun Java Runtime Environment

    Step 7:
Then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Please attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file to your next reply.

    * Make sure you tell me if you had any problems running this procedure; and answer this - "What malware problems are you still experiencing?"

    dr.m
