Possible infection?

Hi. I am not sure if there is anything wrong or not but Avast gave a message of "possible rootkit" recently. This appeared to happen after I ran a driver installation for Edirol UA-25 (audio hardware). I am certain that this was from a trusted source (the manufacturer) and think it is coincidental. I am pretty sure I keep everything fairly clean otherwise. The only issue I have is that I have found that my Vista machine takes 20 - 30 minutes to boot up sometimes - as if on a continuous loop or something.

Many thanks for your help. I attach the logs.

    Hi there. :)

Are you deliberately set up to use a proxy?

    Thank you for the reply

I assume you mean this one - 88.255.148.24:8080 ? That is a Turkish proxy that I tried to set up to search for flights (sometimes cheaper if you appear to be located in a different country) but I never seemed to get it to work and it always defaulted back to my IP - probably something I was not doing correctly.

    Advice?

    Thank you for your help

Before we continue I would like for you to use MSConfig to put this machine back into normal start up mode. Any other mode is primarily used for troubleshooting and diagnostic purposes. You should look into some third party software to control start up's.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    http://img805.imageshack.us/img805/9659/rktigzy.gif Fix items using RogueKiller.

Double-click RogueKiller.exe to run. (Vista/7/8 right-click and select Run as Administrator)
When it opens, press the Scan button
Now click the Registry tab and locate these detections:

    • [Suspicious.Path] \\IHUninstallTrackingTASK -- CMD (/C DEL C:\Users\mark\AppData\Local\Temp\IHU4B0E.tmp.exe) -> Found
    • [PUM.Proxy] HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1686600914-3858124059-2998853700-1000\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings | ProxyServer : 88.255.148.24:8080 -> Found
Place a checkmark next to each of these items, leave the others unchecked.
    Now press the Delete button.
When it is finished, there will be a log on your desktop called: RKreport[2].txt
Attach RKreport[2].txt to your next message. (How to attach)
    Reboot the machine.

Now explain about Avast and exactly what it thinks is a rootkit?

Run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista, Windows7 or Win8) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.
Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running!

    Thank you

    1. I confirm I got the appropriate message when running the fixME.reg file.

    2. I ran Roguekiller again and did as you instructed (the [Suspicious.Path] \\IHUninstallTrackingTASK -- CMD (/C DEL C:\Users\mark\AppData\Local\Temp\IHU4B0E.tmp.exe) entry was not there this time)

However, there was no log file on the desktop. I ran it again and still no log file. I searched the computer and could not find it. I restarted the PC and looked - not there. Then I ran a further scan - still no log file.

    3. Avast: it does not give a message anymore (and has not given a message since before my initial post). It mentioned possible rootkit but I cannot find the message - I looked in the log files of Avast.

    MGTools log attached

    Excellent! :)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    3. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    4. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    6. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.

    7. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

All done. Many thanks for your assistance. Much appreciated.
