Possible malware?

    Hi again,

This may be a software issue, but I'm erring on the side of caution and posting here first. The problem occurs on this computer when logged in as myself. I have extremely slow bootup, spiking CPU usage seemingly at random (terminating svchost solves this), and some software not working properly. I even have trouble shutting down.

I've run scans and haven't detected anything important.

    Thanks for your imput,

    Ed

I have not checked all the logs! Kestrel13! will continue to help you any malware cleanup; however I want to make two important notes impacting your PCs performance:

    • It's an old slow PC with insufficient memory to properly run Windows XP
      Code:
      Processor x86 Family 6 Model 13 Stepping 8 GenuineIntel ~1496 Mhz
      Total Physical Memory 1,024.00 MB
      Available Physical Memory 421.05 MB

    • Your hard disk is small and very little free disk space left by todays standards and this will greatly impact performance and is even worse since you have too little memory.
      Code:
      Size 38.74 GB (41,595,240,448 bytes)
Free Space 6.71 GB (7,200,026,624 bytes)

Chaslang has pointed out the cause of your problems, and once you address that you should be running much more smoothly. There's a little to be done, and a little that can be done if you wish, some optional fixes.

Before we continue I would like for you to use MSConfig to put this machine back into normal start up mode please.

Re run Hitman Pro and have it delete the Potential Unwanted Program.

Use Windows Explorer to find and delete the below files:
    • C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\At1.job
    • C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\At2.job
    • C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\At3.job
    • C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\At4.job

Optional fix (these are NOT malware) to help improve performance.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdateP2GoShortCut] "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\Power2Go\MUITransfer\MUIStartMenu.exe" "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\Power2Go" UpdateWithCreateOnce "SOFTWARE\CyberLink\Power2Go\6.0"
    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdatePSTShortCut] "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\DVD Suite\MUITransfer\MUIStartMenu.exe" "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\DVD Suite" UpdateWithCreateOnce "Software\CyberLink\PowerStarter"

    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DVDLauncher] "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD\DVDLauncher.exe"
    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CLMLServer] "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\Power2Go\CLMLSvc.exe"

    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe ARM] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\ARM\1.0\AdobeARM.exe"
    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CarboniteSetupLite] "C:\Program Files\Carbonite\CarbonitePreinstaller.exe" /preinstalled /showonfirst /reshowat=1800
    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AdobeAAMUpdater-1.0] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\OOBE\PDApp\UWA\UpdaterStartupUtility.exe"
    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SwitchBoard] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\SwitchBoard\SwitchBoard.exe
    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AdobeCS6ServiceManager] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\CS6ServiceManager\CS6ServiceManager.exe" -launchedbylogin
    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\Hp\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe
    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k
    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NeroFilterCheck] C:\WINDOWS\system32\NeroCheck.exe
    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java\Java Update\jusched.exe"
    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe"
    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Smart File Advisor] "C:\Program Files\Smart File Advisor\sfa.exe" /checkassoc
    • O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [DellSupportCenter] "C:\Program Files\Dell Support Center\bin\sprtcmd.exe" /P DellSupportCenter
    • O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [DellSupport] "C:\Program Files\DellSupport\DSAgnt.exe" /startup
    • O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [uTorrent] "C:\Program Files\uTorrent\uTorrent.exe"
    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista, Windows7 or Win8) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

You are still not in normal start up mode according to your logs.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others) and running MGclean.bat did not remove them, you can delete these files now.
    3. Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    4. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    5. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    7. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.

    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
