I inadvertently downloaded visualbee and this led to my computer telling me I had immenent hard drive failure and when I log in my desktop background is black and there are no items, quicklaunch buttons, or time. I am unable to access the internet either. I am running Windows 8 and none of the "hot corners" work and the start menu is unavailable. I have an HP Elitebook 2730p with windows 8 pro installed. I followed the instructions under the malware removal/cleaning links. The logs are attached. I don't believe MGtools worked correctly because in the command prompt box after each of the .bat files it said the file is not recognized as an internal or external command. Please help if you can!

    Download OTL to your desktop.

    • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
    • Vista and Windows 7 users Right-click OTL and choose Run as Administrator)
    • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
    • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
    • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.

When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.

Attach both of these logs into your next reply.

Please run MGTools in safe mode and see if it will then run.

Please download these files to your desktop.

    Dhcp.reg

    AFD.reg

    NetBIOS.reg

    BFE.reg

    • Now please click Start, and type regedit into the search box.
    • You should see a regedit.exe and icon appear in the Programs area of the Start Menu.
    • Right click on regedit.exe and select Run As Administrator
    • Then in the Registry Editor menu click File and select Import.
    • Navigate to the Dhcp.reg file saved to your Desktop and double click it. Allow it to be added to the registry. Repeat this for all the other reg files.

Download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com and unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop.
    • Now run Repair_Windows.exe by double clicking on it ( if you are running Vista or Win 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator)
    • Now select the Start Repairs tab.
    • The click the Start button.
    • Create a System Restore point if prompted.
    • On the next screen, click the Unselect All button to first deselect all repairs.
    • Now select the following repair options:
      • Reset Registry Permissions
      • Reset File Permissions
      • Register System Files
      • Repair WMI
      • Repair Windows Firewall
      • Remove Policies Set By Infections
      • Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
      • Repair Proxy Settings
      • Repair Windows Updates
      • Set Windows Services To Default Startup
    • Now on the lower right side check the box to Restart/Shutdown System When Finished
    • Then make sure the Restart System radio button is enabled.
    • Shutdown any other programs that you are running now before continuing.
    • Now click the Start button.
    • Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items.
    • It should reboot automatically when finished.

After reboot, check to see if your firewall is working.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

I added the registry files. I ran the program and the firewall is on. I ran the GetLogs.bat file and here is the .zip file.

Also, when I ran the windows repair by tweaking.com I was unable to check the reset registry permission because it is disabled in windows 8 due to an App Store Bug. Thank you for all your help so far!

Can you try adding the registry files in safe mode please. It did not work.

Once that has been done... do this: run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Actually I did add these files while in safe mode, then I ran windows repair in normal mode and the GetLogs.bat in safe mode

So you did. OK, let's try seeing if system restore helps. Revert back to a point you think is clear.

    Windows 8 System Restore Guide

Now see if you can boot normally and not have to use safe mode.

I reverted back to the farthest point possible which was 7/3/13 it did not show that the problem that i believe started it all, visualbee, would be affected but I was pretty sure this point was before I installed visualbee, so I attempted the restore. When the computer rebooted I received this message

"System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed.

    Details:
System Restore failed while scanning the files system on the drive C:/
The drive might be corrupt. You might want to retry the System Restore after running chkdsk /R on this disk.
An unspecified error occurred during System Restore. (0x80070571)

You can try System Restore again and chosse a different restore point. If you continue to see this error, you can try an advanced recovery method."

and did you indeed try this?

Did you try a different R.P?

I did the chkdks /r then tried the system restore again and there were no restore points for me to choose from.

You tried adding the reg files in safe mode previously. Can you try normal mode please and then continue with the rest of the fix in post #6. :)

    The logs look great. :)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    3. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    4. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    6. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others) and running MGclean.bat did not remove them, you can delete these files now.
    7. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    8. If you are running Win 8, Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below to flush restore points:
      • Refer to the instructions for your WIndows version in this link: Disable And Enable System Restore
      • What we want you to do is to first disable System Restore to flush restore points some of which could be infected.
      • Then we want you to Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

I suggest you post in the hardware forum! Sounds like your hard drive is failing. :(

I haven't done that because this screen has been there since I first posted but only came up soon after I downloaded visual bee and was one of the main reasons why I believed it to be a SMART virus not an actual hard drive failure. I have had this computer for only 3 years and I have never had a problem with it before. And like I said everything started after I downloaded visual bee unless this program can fry my hard drive :/

    • VisualBee V.5 Toolbar

Uninstall it and let me know if the problems go away.

i uninstalled that, then i searched my computer for visualbee and deleted the two things that came up, one was a folder in /appdata and the other was a visualbee install log, i then restarted my computer which caused it to do 10 updates and everything still looks the same :/
