    hi all

a couple of days ago i noticed my internet connection (wireless broadband, usb stick modem) had recieved over 200mb and sent over 100mb whilst sitting idly for a few hours. i ran a couple of checks (avg, malware bytes, spybot, adaware etc) and removed a few nasties. everything comes up clean now, but the problem persists.

iv only now installed a firewall (online armour) and can see that it is services.exe and svchost sending out multiple connections (over 20) when i connect to the internet. if i block these 2 services, i cannot access the internet at all.
after some preliminary online investigation, 50% of ppl say these servces definitely need access to the net, while the other half say it should be fine to block them (i have auto updates etc turned off, so its not that). obviously with that amount of data sent and recieved, somethings seriously wrong.
the services.exe does seem to be the genuine microsoft file, located in windows/system32

iv been trawling the net for the past 10 hours looking for a fix and come up empty. have found hints of others having this exact problem though, but no answer about how to clean it was forthcoming. iv attached all the relevant logs*, hoping someone can help me out before i go and just reformat the c drive.

the rootrepeal result was the most worrying. i included my removable usb drive in the scan, as i used it recently on a public computer :-o , and the scan showed an mbr rootkit detected. thats bad right?

any help with this problem would be hugely appreciated. thanks =)

    * couldnt run the combofix program as i could not uninstall online armor from either the uninstall file in program files, or using uninstall programs from control panel (nothing happens...????). also could not 100% disable AVG, took it out of the startup programs in msconfig, but combofix told me it was still running.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 16

I also suggest that you uninstall FreeFixer

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: AVG Security Toolbar BHO - {A3BC75A2-1F87-4686-AA43-5347D756017C} - C:\Program Files\AVG8\Toolbar\IEToolbar.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: AVG Security Toolbar BHO - {A3BC75A2-1F87-4686-AA43-5347D756017C} - C:\Program Files\AVG8\Toolbar\IEToolbar.dll (file missing)
    O3 - Toolbar: AVG Security Toolbar - {CCC7A320-B3CA-4199-B1A6-9F516DD69829} - C:\Program Files\AVG8\Toolbar\IEToolbar.dll (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Now you must run MSconfig and select Normal Startup mode as was requested in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME FIRST.

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\avenger.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

thank you chaslang for all your help :)

ok, iv done everything requested and the logs are attached. also ran combofix and its results are attached too. as a sidenote, how do i now disable being asked during startup to select windows xp or recovery console?

so after running all the processes, AVG gave this alert:

and for some reason i cannot access D:\system volume information in explorer - "Access is Denied"

so far im not having the same problems whilst connected to the net. fingers crossed it stays that way.

rootrepeal is still telling me there's a rootkit detected on the external drive hard drive however. please let me know if/how i need to address this.

    thanks:)

That is not something we recommend doing. It could be a life saver if you get certain malware infections or have certain problems with Windows. Especially if you do not have a Windows XP bootable CD from which you can run the Recovery Console. Your bootup only stops for a couple of seconds at most on this screen. If you don't touch anything, it will just continue on with normal bootup.

Not a problem since final steps clean system restore.

That is the way it is supposed to be.

Is this external drive a bootable drive that windows can run from? Is it a Windows formatted drive or a MAC drive or both? What kind of software was use to partition and format it.

Your logs are clean, but I suggest that you see if you can delete the below file:
    C:\Documents and Settings\xp\Local Settings\Temp\SV58F.TMP

still getting virus alerts tho. latest one was C drive's system volume information - Trojan Horse BackDoor.Generic12.QRC

there's no windows os installed on the external drive. i use it on both a windows system and an OSX system. pretty sure i just started using it straight out of the box so i dont know what kind of software was used to format and partition in. (its a WD 'My Passport' 320g drive)

    thanks =)

As already stated. We have not run final instructions yet!!!!

Then it should not be a problem if there is no Windows boot partition on it. The scan just may not recognize the formatting/partition info.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
