possible to disable IE8 download from AU?

Is it possible to disable IE8 download from AU temporarily and pick it up at a later time? I just read this,
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/dd441788.aspx

And, it looks to be pretty darn confusing to me.. I like my IE7, and don't want to have to mess with my Roxio, or google toolbar, etc.. Maybe at a later time I will be more BRAVE to take it, but not at this time...... :confused

I don't like having problems after an update, so maybe nip this in the bud first, what do you think?

I haven't seen appear in AU yet. Has it? What do you mean by "nip this in the bud"? I know the general meaning of the expression, but do you mean here?

Re: IE8, I tried it briefly in my Win XP system and found it sluggish, compared to IE7. I removed it. Frankly, I don't think it's ready for prime time. I recommend avoiding it.

    Hi TeeCee

    Yes this http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...FamilyID=21687628-5806-4ba6-9e4e-8e224ec6dd8c

Edit, should have added the command switch for you also, once run the app will ask you for a location to save it choose C:
Then open a CMD prompt (Start > Run and type CMD if XP or if Vista click Start type in Start Search CMD and then right click CMD and choose Run as Administrator) > type at the prompt CD C:\ and hit enter then at the C: prompt type IE80Blocker.cmd /B

to re-enable it goto CMD prompt and type IE80Blocker.cmd /U

hello, usafveteran, what I meant by 'nip this in the bud' was I happen to LIKE my IE 7, and I read a lot of problems some are running into with IE 8, I just shutter at the thought! No disrespect, for sure;)

I'm not liking what I am reading, and would prefer they get the bugs out of it first... It will be coming out in AU starting April 27 thru June 24.
    http://www.neowin.net/news/main/09/03/19/ie-8expected-windows-update-and-automatic-updates-schedule

I just wanted to avoid the download and then having to remove it later. I have XP SP3, and I happen to like what I have, don't need a bunch of problems to go along with IE8...Scary thought! Thanks for the heads up too :wave

Hi Halo, I'll try the link first... If that doesn't work, I'll go to comand prompt, :confused but I have XP, not Vista... Thanks;)

Really, I share your views on IE8. It just appeared in the list of automatic updates pending download in my Vista laptop. I will not allow it to be installed.

Did you visit the link Halo posted? It tells how to Disable Automatic Delivery of Internet Explorer 8. I'm going to do just that.

Edit: Oh, by the way, IE is not my primary browser. Firefox works great.

You could simply change your WU settings, so you get to decide what's installed, not M$.

I don't think I'll install it in Vista, but quite like the way it works in Windows 7.

The Microsoft tool is for Windows XP Service Pack 2; Windows XP Service Pack 3, too.

Hello again, Windows XP, SP3, IE7... The toolkit went fine, and I have IE8 blocked now.. ;)

EDIT: I did visit the site, picked up the 'pkg' and then did the comand prompt.. Went almost too easy! ;)

You have the same choices in both systems - turn it off, notify only, download and notify, or automatic.

Hello Earthling, I kinda like the Au features, but one time I unchecked an update in the website, and I had to have it burned to a CD in order to install it.. Not anymore... My ISP has BURNED it into me that if it is critical or important, ALLOW it to install... I don't mess with that! Also, I don't know what a lot of them do, but know they must be installed.

However, I don't like the reviews I am reading about IE 8. Yes, IE 7 is my one and only browser... I like how it works... Heck, I just got used to this one! I just happen to like IE7 over IE 6, but not quite ready for IE8.. Now, does that make any sense?:-D

    Hi TeeCee

I've always had mine on download and notify. I might not have a clue what the updates do, but it does give me the illusion of being in control :cool

Hi Earthling, LOL! I have always had mine on AU. Kind of the same illusion :-D !!

I just called Microsoft Canada, Cust Service and she told me to change the Windows Update to "download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them". She also told me that if any problems with the IE 8 browser, support is free. I think that the above option will only temporarily block it though.

Anyway, I chose to download and install the IE 8 blocker instead although I posted that tool a while back here on MG but didn't know if it also would be valid for XP Home since that one isn't mentioned in Microsoft's article.

While IE 8 may fix some security issues, there's also a lot of stuff being added that I am not fond of. It's Firefox anyway and only use IE 7 for Windows Update.

PS: From what I've read, SpywareBlaster and IE 8 don't get along, don't know about Spybot's compatibility with IE 8.

Hi oma, I now have the blocker, but I have Windows XP Professional, not home, and it seemed to go just fine.. I know there is free support for IE8, just want to avoid the hassles of all the stuff that WON'T work with IE8. I sure wish they would get the bugs out before releasing it... Thanks for your note. ;)

The Toolkit to Disable Automatic Delivery of Internet Explorer 8 isn't working for me. The web page says, "Click on the link to download the package and select ‘Open’ to run the package. You will be asked to accept the end-user license agreement (EULA) before you gain access to the package components." I do not see "Open"; I see the option to Save or Run. I tried Run. Installation appears to start but stops and asks for a location in which to extract the files. I select a location and files appear to be extracted, but there's no change in the AU panel; it still shows IE8 as an Important update.

This pertains to my Vista Home Premium SP1 laptop.

    oma MajorGeek

Yep, the blocker also worked in XP Home as far as I can tell by the message it gave me. From what I've read here on MG and on the web, some people seem to have problems with IE 8 and its compatibility with other software and web sites. I'm not totally convinced that even MSFT free support will be able to address/resolve all problems that users may experience after installation of IE 8. Everyone has a unique set-up. I've got only one machine, am a senior in age and won't risk it by installing IE 8.

It's been offered here tonight, but I'm going to untick it and hide it. See what happens. Sorry about the thumbnail - can't get it to post full size

Did you use the IE browser to download? That's what I did, selected RUN and C for location, it worked. Perhaps for Vista it's different?

    Try the above.

    oma MajorGeek

You've got IE8 already showing as an important update? In that case, I don't know whether it's too late to download and install the IE8 blocker. Can you hide it? If not, call Microsoft support, it's supposed to be free of charge for this browser according to MSFT Canada.

    According to this link: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2009/04/10/prepare-for-automatic-update-distribution-of-ie8.aspx
one is supposed to have the blocking tool installed by April 20.

Hi all, I downloaded the blocking tool this afternoon, and it is blocking it; This is copied from windowsupdate.log:

Update 8E38CE36-9FA2-4BCD-A64A-FB30C3F6C3DE is "PerUpdate" regulated and can NOT download. Sequence 2459 vs AcceptRate 0.

I did the same as oma, and it worked fine.. As you can see, it is blocking it. Maybe you can try the CMD Prompt:
"Edit, should have added the command switch for you also, once run the app will ask you for a location to save it choose C:
Then open a CMD prompt (Start > Run and type CMD if XP or if Vista click Start type in Start Search CMD and then right click CMD and choose Run as Administrator) > type at the prompt CD C:\ and hit enter then at the C: prompt type IE80Blocker.cmd /B"

I just checked with Windows Update site, and IE8 is not showing in the Critical or even important, so the blocker must be working :-D :-D

How are you making out, usafveteran?

Ran the Blocker Toolkit. It works just fine. I'll wait until most(all) of the IE8 bugs are worked out.

I had initially downloaded the tool using Firefox. I tried it again with IE and this tool still does nothing on my system. I might just hide the update.

Couldn't find the code in Windows Update log, just too crowded in there, over 1 GB there.

According to the pic below the IE 8 is blocked.

Too bad it didn't work for you usafveteran. :( Good thing you can hide it though. (don't know if that option is available in Home XP, at least not in the same way I did see it in the Vista pic) But then IE 8 wasn't offered to me yet.

Hi , did you do the CMD prompt? Give this a whirl, it WILL work for you (I think?) I checked mine, and it is blocking IE8. If you are not sure, try this :
Run> windowsuupdate.log> OK, and look at the log, and see if it shows "0" updates to install, or if it shows IE8 still. If you open this, go strait to the bottom of the page, and check there first. If you see IE8 as "download pending", run the CMD prompt below. This way, you can always resume it later on... If you so desire. This is a good 'block', and not a deletion.. It can be unblocked... ;) Best of luck to you, but do try this before un-checking it in the Windows Update site....

'Edit, should have added the command switch for you also, once run the app will ask you for a location to save it choose C:
Then open a CMD prompt (Start > Run and type CMD if XP or if Vista click Start type in Start Search CMD and then right click CMD and choose Run as Administrator) > type at the prompt CD C:\ and hit enter then at the C: prompt type IE80Blocker.cmd /B"

Hi oma, mine says the same.. usafvetran, try the CMD prompt, and it will tell you if it is installed and working.. I didn't get no bells or whistles myself, but when I checked that, it showed the same as oma's screenshot, and is working like a charm... Maybe yours is too.. Give it a whirl, and see what ya have there ;)

Just hiding it seems to be effective, in Vista anyway. Haven't looked at XP yet.

Dont believe all you read, its a coincidence with Spywareblaster and more likely in the main to be Spybot S&D, as the now 10 PCs I have IE8 and Spywareblaster on are all ok, I dont run Spybot as I dont perronally like it.

Dunno honestly what bugs to be ironed out some think their are to actually be ironed out! many issues are now with 3rd parties and poor programming as for many years IE was not following standards, now it is and sloppy programming is being caught out.

Update your apps and mainly anything that will add blocked sites and exceptions to IE or any media addon as in Flash, Shockwave, Java and any toolbar you may like and its generally fine, but like all software its not going to be to everyones taste and thats fine and dandy!

If some websites dont look right and seem not compatible, use the compatiablity option which is the icon that looks like a torn peice of paper between refresh and the X by rigth side address bar.

But IE8 has some great options, like in the event your browser or a site crashes it will recover your last known tabs and sites, other features here

I use IE8 daily with no issues on 99.9% of sites, and for record do also use Minefield 3.6a1pre as well as Opera 10.

Hello, Halo, take a look at this link:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/dd441788.aspx

It tells of TONS of "Compatibility issues with Programs & Add-ons"....
1-Google Toolbar - this is my second hand.
2-Roxio Drive Letter Access-- I Love my Roxio
3-Java - been there, done that....don't want to do it again
    4-Intuit TurboTax Online

These are just to name a few.... Now, I have the google toolbar on mine, and I use it. I use the spell check, the auto fill, and especially the translate a webpage from a different language, because I have a good friend who's website is in Dutch, and the only way I can read it is thru this translator button.. It translates the entire site into English for me.

With IE8, it looks to me anyway, that I could lose all of that. Noooo, I don't want to do that...... I like my buttons.. :-D...... yes, I do hope they get those bugs worked out... those are my major issues with IE 8. :cool
