Possible Virus or Malware?

When my computer first boots up and I get my desktop, a little message box pops up and say something about "DNA" and something about "remote server not connecting" - or something like that. It pops up quickly and then disappears.

I run McAfee, but it hasn't found anything. I did have about a week ago something called Puper and it noted it was a Trojan. It deleted several executeables.

    Could this be related?

    Thanks

Have Windows Internet Explorer windows continuously popping up

I have a friend who called me last night and indicated that they have Microsoft Internet Explorer window popping up continuously. Had them run McAfee and it found nothing.

Has anyone ever heard of this?

Is Puper malware, and how dangerous is it?

I ran a McAfee scan using Enterprise 8.5 which found and deleted the Puper "trojan". Just how dangerous is this trojan, and what could it have done?

Just trying to learn more about Malware, Trojans, etc.

    Thanks

Please begin by clicking Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager > View > Show Hidden Devices.
    • Scroll down to “Non-plug and Play Drivers” and click the plus icon to open those drivers.
    • Then search forTDSSserv.sys
    • Let me know if you find this or not.
    • If you do find it, right click on it, and select Disable. Do not try to uninstall it.
    • Also if TDSSserv.sys is found and you disable it, then reboot.
    • After reboot continue on with the below cleaning instructions.

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
    Notes:
    1. If you run into problems trying to run theREAD & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can run steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

There can be various reasons for this ...many of which are malware related. I would suggest that you ask your friend to become a member here at MG's and begin doing the Read and Run First instructions here in the malware section. :)

Corporal Punishment - I did not find the TDSSserv.sys.

The only thing I haven't done is to download Online Armor, but I noticed there's a version on sale for $39.95 at www.tallemu.com. Is there any difference between the downloadable version through the link on the MajorGeeks website, versus the $39.95 version?

Thanks for your post. I get the firewall running, and hopefully I'm in much better shape than I was before.

    Thanks again,

    Dave

Corporal - also, just came up this morning, and it's wanting me to install SP3 for Windows XP. I've heard mixed signals on whether SP3 causes problems or not. What's your recommendation?

    Have a Happy Holiday!

    Thanks again!

Not knowing if your system is clean or not, I can not recommend doing any service pack updates. It is not a wise idea to try to update a system that may still have malware on it.
