Possibly replacing laptop fan- should I replace processor too?

    Hi all,

My HP dv7 3069-wm laptop fan has started making a braying noise on occasion, if I shut down the laptop and re-start it and/or possibly shake the laptop when it's shut down it has fixed it so far, but I'm worried that I might have to replace the laptop fan sometime soon. The reason why this worries me is that for the HP dv7 you literally have to take apart the entire laptop to get at the fan, it is completely and utterly farking ridiculous. Seriously, check out the Youtube video at the bottom of the page to see what's involved with just cleaning/replacing a stupid fan, it's completely asinine. I'm almost considering upgrading to a new laptop that has fan access just to not have to deal with it, but don't want to sell a laptop with a bunk fan on ebay b/c it will probably scare buyers off and won't sell for much.

    My questions are these-

If I do try and replace the fan, should I go ahead and try and upgrade the processor while the computer is taken apart? What kind of specs do I need to keep in mind while looking for a new processor, ie what the motherboard can handle, etc? I've looked but haven't been able to find the mobo specs. The processor that's in my laptop now is a 2.10 GHz AMD Athlon II Dual-Core Processor M320. What kind of processors can I upgrade to? I've already put in a SSD but my laptop could use a little boost anyways. No gaming or anything, just browsing and multitasking mostly.

Thanks a bunch for any help.

According to the maintenance and service guide available here (it's the 12th item down), you apparently can go up to an AMD Turion™ X2 Ultra Dual-Core M640 35-W, 2.60-GHz with 2-MB L2 cache on the CPU. I don't know if you'll need a higher volume cooling fan for it though.

It might be a good idea to download that manual and print it out so you've got a hard copy in front of you while you're working on the laptop.

I had to go through the same type of ordeal with my Dell Precision M70 to replace the system board. I had the service manual in front of me. Desktops are a lot easier to work on than laptops I'm sure you'll agree. :)
