I am currently putting together a new 8x12 workspace and am looking for ideas of how to arrange my bench. Post ideas and pics of things that have worked well for you and things that haven't like, height of bench, placement of tools and electrical outlets , shelving , etc.

I know some of you DIY'ers have some killer setups :D

I lost all my book marks last update of Firefox, but I had some interesting woodworking sites.

    Let me dig later tonight.

    :)

how did you lose them with the update Bored? I don't know how to back mine up... usually when I update Firefox, I uninstall via Add/Remove programs, then delete my Mozilla Firefox folder in Program Files... then I install my new Firefox version and my bookmarks always seem to preserve...

dude, I don't know know if you use t-pins or how durableou need the surface to be, but I've found that for model airplanes and a good all around workbench that using a hollow core door is great.
The Luan is weak enough to push a t-pin through, it's super cheap, and after it's all messed up you flip it over and have a fresh side.
simply marry some 2x4s to the wall, then triangulate that to form braces on the wall. After that simply lay the hollow core door on top and you're done.
Once you've used both sides, just toss it and go buy another, they're about $20 for an unfinished one at the home improvement place.
I find that I like my workbenchs a little higher than my waist. As that's a comfortable height for me to work at, I like to be able to reach the back of th bench without bending over.
Of course, there's a lot of other factors, are you planning on buying stools or anything else to sit on while you work? I work mostly standing up.

Here's a pic of my bench in the garage. There's no bigger DIY than me, (I did pay a guy to do my roof $4500 but roofing's too hard on the body) but I don't have much of a bench. It needs a new vice, but minimum $80 for a good six inch is tough to come up with. The light you see hanging there is an old dentist's lamp. I highly recommend one of those. No real order to anything. Kind of like my life. If I did anything at home that generated income I'd have a setup worth showing. Most projects I take on don't utilize the bench.

I tried to get some pics to post for you Randy, but Harbour Freight, Walmart and Coastal objected to me walking round the store taking photos of their stock ;)

We just built hubby's workshop this summer and are still in the process of decking it out. I'll post some outside pics tho (at work right now) if anyone would like to see :)

I had unfinished garage walls in the new house we bought on our return to Texas, so I measured space, went to Lowe's and bought prefab sections and just screwed them to the wall studs by means of 1x4's like you would mount any cabinet. Then I put a piece of 4x8 pegboard in center and laid a countertop 10' long on top of the cabinets. I added 3 two-foot by seven-foot locker type storage cabinets for golf club storage and chairs, etc. The 10 foot center section was made up of two 3' and two 2' lower cabinets. Went together just perfectly and gave me huge area. I mounted my air compressor on the right side of the pegboard just to get it out of the way. Center electrical plug was already there. It sure is functional for me.

How in the world can you find anything with all that organization and neatness. You are doing a disservice to the toolboxes and tackleboxes of all males! ;)

Very nice and so simple. How often do you get to the course?

SHEWHOMUSTBEOBEYED and I go out and slog the little white ball 3 (occas. 4) days a week. My handicap has come down to 8. Amazing how much consistency comes with regularity of play. Lovin' it.

My only bitch is that the weather here has been so oppressive, that I come in looking like a drowned rat.

GK, what kind of air compressor is that? and did it come with a wall mount bracket, or is it something that you fashioned? That seems like it would be ideal.

Campbell-Hausfield 135 psi, 2 gallon, Iron Man, Wall Mount.

Works nice, portable and lightweight. Cost about $100 at Lowe's, I think.

Hung it up high on pegboard to keep it out of the way, but it is nicely portable.

You guys have given me some great ideas. Thanks for all the pics. I just have to see if I can swing one of these automated winders now. If I can that will change the layout quite a bit.
