Aw, my desktop is so boring by comparison. It is just a half reclined mountain lion centered, with two brownish bars to either side where I set my icons. The only redeeming feature is that when my machine starts up there is a mountain lion growl and when it shuts down there is a house cat sounding like it got it's tail stepped on.

Oh, they all have thier uses :) Laptop is good for surfing, watching videos, using skype/gaim that kinda thing. It's also good for doing DJing type things from. The main desktop I use for graphics type things, like video editing, graphic design, animation sound editing, listening to music. Though all 3 computers are connected sound wise so any sound from any of the computers will come out my speakers :)

Style XP and a theme, you can get them from http://www.themexp.org/. THey have maybe close to 100,000 difeent themes And the prgram you can get in a lot of places surprised it's not on here! A word of warning though, lately a lot of the themes come wrapped in adware, some of it is hard to get rid of. there are two ways I deal with it. The themes are free and created by individuals that design them and then post them. I usually go through and get a couple hndred that I like or think I might like and then unzip them into a folder on a virtual PC then fight the adware, then copy the files from the virtual to the host PC. the other way is to go ahead and unzip them to a folder and then chase down the adware and delete it now it's only two types and if you go that way then one is easy to delete the other requires deleteing the folder, deleteing a file from the windows folder, and then running a registry cleaner then going to Add/Remove programs and removing it that way, then reboot. I know it sounds like a group of work but thats why I usually get a whole pile when I go there because it's the same you can do hundreds and it just reinstalls the adware to the same folder, etc. The other way is to use a P2P program and search for the themes, and download them, I just downloaded a file that contians 1000 themes, 1000 wallpalers, and 1000 bootscreens!

Downloading files with a p2p program is more likely to give you malware problems than downloading from a legitimate source.

We can't recommend downloading ANYTHING with ANY p2p client as apart from the massive risk of infection, if the files you download are copyrighted in anyway you are breaking the law.

All righty then as I posted, these are freeware downloads, these are created by people that charge nothing for them the site owner infects them with adware to "cover costs" of operating the site. Not sure who the We is that you refer to but there are a lot of good P2P programs out there several are right here on MG, but since the worst viruses lately have been e-mail types then I guess I should dump my e-mail client too, viruses can also be embedded in web graphics, like those in this thread, it's like sex if you use the right protection then there are no regrets, if you don't you will end up with something you didn't expect.

The point in fact is that when downloading a file using a p2p client you are in the person 'hosting' the file's hands as to what it really is. There are millions of viruses out there that arn't known by AV programs and wouldn't be picked up by them, we see them everyday in the malware forum.

Perhaps I shouldn't have said 'we', it is my reccomendation, it may or may not be the same opinion as others here.

WIth all of the examples you gave above, no matter what the protection there is always the risk of infection by new and unknown nasties. By not taking the risk in the first place (again with ALL examples above) and using known safe 'sources' you have no chance of infection.

not sure how to break this to you but any time you connect to any thing you are connecting to another computer! No matter what you think you are coneecting to the bottom line is it is another computer. THe Whole interent thing is just a simple form of computer networking. Now this is all new to me I have only been at it since 1976, but the problems with any type of attack on your computer requires that everyone stay on top of the latest info both good and bad, and depend on what othrs have gone through to expand your own education on these matters. And what is a safe source, I can connect and some kid is banging the ports onn my computer while I connect to even the safest source, Try to remember that the safe source today is the spyware capital of next week (ie excite.com), sorry the way I see it if you conect at all be ready to do battle with hackers, virues, spyware, adware, active X installers, and if your not real bright then install a WIFI and let everyone in the area have access to your computer. In this day and age you prepare for the worst and still get to enjoy your computer, I enjoy mine and on my last sweep I deleted 16 spyware/adware files and 1 virus was sent to me by e-mail these were all caught by the protection programs I use and those are checked with other programs of the same type, ie spyware Doctor is checked by webroot spysweeper, etc. it is a small price to pay to keep my system free of things that o bump in the night!

I am fully aware of how the internet works, although I wouldn't have used the terms 'simple networking' to describe a network of computers that includes nearly every university, government, and research facility in the world.

How would you connecting to a source open up ports on your computer for 'some kid to bang' ? A properly set up firewall would mean that unless you are running a server no one can even see your ports. in fact they shouldn't even be opening and listening unless you are running a server.

You've been at it since 1976 and its still new to you ?

In the interests of keeping this thread on topic I will concede the point that you never know where the next infection may come from. My point is only this: Why increase the risk of infection by using a p2p client to download files that are legitimatly available in more safe areas of the internet ?

    Now, back to the desktops!

Hi DAKz, the 'we' matt is refering to is the MG site. Matt is a site authorized malware fighter and spends countless hours helping those that need it. Im sure you understand that it is critical that we all help to protect the integrity of this site and the saftey of its members. Its not that we like to tell others what to do, but its not a policy of MG to advise those that are less 'savy' on how to access p2p programs to gain what they need, thats all.
    great desktop by the way.......cheers

@nitecrawler; I think we are all saying the same here the bottom line is protection and experience of others.

@matt.chugg I would use the term simple based on the fact that anyone no matter what their experience level is can walk into almost anywhere and grab up a AOL cd and be on line in two minutes, as far as the government sites, etc I remember them well, they were the original internet when I was in the military using it, then you had to type in the numeric IP address and the port, aww the good ol days. My ports are hidden by my firewall, but my firewall also is good enough to tell me when someone starts banging them, even zone alarm free will do that. this all being new to me was being sarcastic. And yes I am running a server, see below. And to me and I guess I am clearly wrong that if we don't fight these people that push the bad on us by protecting ourselves, and teaching less experienced, then we don't have to worry about if our machine will run vista, or desktops, we will all be back to dos prompts. you know seems like everytime I come here and try to participate in a thread it brings out people that want to argue...think I need to find another place, and thanks for the compliment on the desktop I enjoy it, the start menu is so cool!

Your profile shows your are running Windows 2003 Server yes. This does not in any way mean you are running a server in the client:server sense of the word I was using. It is merely the name of the OS.

If your ports are hidden then no one person will be banging them. It is far more likely that is it some worm ip and port scanning in an attempt to propgate. being behind a properly set up router would prevent them even reaching your software firewall.

I am not arguing. I made a point, and as far as I am concerned you have not given any valid argument for using a p2p client whatsoever.

My point remains. whether or not you do is of course your own decision. it would be a shame though if you felt you needed to go elsewhere because of a discussion.

I won't be responding to any more posts about this made on this thread, if you wish to have a discussion about the security implications of p2p networking then please feel free to start a thread of your own to discuss it.

Lets get this thread back to the topic of desktops.
