    Hi Rae

If you have fully completed the steps in the guide and have the logs then just post them in this thread of yours by following this HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post

ok- here are my 1st 3 log files- did I save them wrong because they are showing documents and settings?

The problem I am still having is immediate popups as soon as I open a browser ( I use IE 6.0 most often). Also, my trendmicro tells me that the file located in C:\\windows\system32\tempA.tmp.dll is infected with the Troj_BHO.CD virus- I did see this on some of the scans that you listed to download and run, but it said it found and deleated the virus.

Renaming the hijackthis.exe file has nothing to do with the name of the log that will be produced. That is hard coded into the program. All you did was change the name of the executable file. We could call it anything we want and it will not change the name of the log file.

Start by downloading two tools we will need

    - Process Explorer

    - Pocket KillBox

Extract them to their own folder somewhere that you will be able to locate them later.
Is your copy of CounterSpy a paid version or free trial version? If free, uninstall it now.
Uninstall the below old versions of software:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
Now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Make sure you have rebooted in Normal Mode (do not open any other processes)

    Now Run Process Explorer

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of arptha.dll once and then click the kill button. After you have killed all of the arptha.dll under winlogon click ok. (If you do not find the dll, just continue on.)

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of arptha.dll and kill it. (If you do not find the dll, just continue on.)

    Now just exit Process Explorer.

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = localhost
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0676CC61-CDC5-447e-AAFC-9D886EC820EB} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmp109.tmp.dll (file missing)

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UserFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\MSMSGS.EXE" /background
    O8 - Extra context menu item: E&xport to Microsoft Excel - res://C:\PROGRA~1\MI1933~1\OFFICE11\EXCEL.EXE/3000
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\msjava.dll (file missing)
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Sun Java Console - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\msjava.dll (file missing)
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: arptha - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\arptha.dll

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.
Note for IE 7 users: You need to select Internet Options then the Advanced tab and then Reset Internet Explorer Settings!

Now run Pocket Killbox by doubleclicking on killbox.exe
Choose Tools > Delete Temp Files and click Delete Selected Temp Files.
Then after it deletes the files click the Exit (Save Settings) button.
NOTE: Pocket Killbox will only list the added files it is able to find on the system. So when you do the below, if some files do not show in the list after pasting them in, just continue.

    Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
    • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\arptha.dll
    • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
    • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt.
If you receive a PendingFileRenameOperations prompt, just click OK to continue (But please let me know if you receive this message!).

If Killbox does not reboot just reboot your PC yourself.

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. GetRunKey
    2. ShowNew
    3. HJT
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

all went smoothly- reboot was much faster then before- i also did a few basic searches using the name virus (this is when I would get popups tellng me my computer was infected) and no popups thus far...

I have another computer that is very slow upon startup as well as with surfing- should i run through the steps you have on the 'read this first' page?

do you guys have a donation page set up anywhere???

    Thanks again

The below line is still there:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

Did you miss it or did it come back? Try again. If it still shows in your log tell me and I'll have to give you a special removal procedure.

Yes run the READ ME on it and start a new thread for the new PC. Make sure you indicate in that thread that it is a NEW PC so that we do not get it confused with this one.

No! We do it privately via PayPal if you like. You can PM me with an email address if you want to do this. It is purely voluntary.
