I have just completed a routine scan of my PC with Malwarebytes Anti-malware. It found a PUP. How dangerous are they? There are three user accounts on my PC. My user account is the sole administrator account. Do I need to run the same scan whilst logged into the other two user accounts? Should I temporarily give them administrator rights whilst performing the scan?

    I use Windows 7 (x64) HP SP1.

    Hi there,

A PUP, a potentially unwanted programme is not necessarily dangerous per se. You should attach the log if you want me to take a look, and if you suspect malware you should follow through with this link:

Thank you! I have followed the instructions at your link. As can be seen from the two images I attach, under History there are no logs in Quarantine (cf. Image_1) and no logs under Application Logs (cf. Image_2). Have I done something I shouldn't have?

Scan with Malware Bytes on each user account. See if it finds anything else. Let me know! Then as I have said previously, if you suspect malware, then you should follow the instructions I gave you back in post # 2.

    Hi

Thank you. Due to the time of year, I've not had the opportunity to run the scan on the other user a/cs yet. What I can do, if it's of any use, is tell you the name of the PUP MBAM discovered. It was, C:\Users\Mark\Documents\produkeyx64\ProduKey.exe

    Publisher's description
ProduKey is a small utility that displays the ProductID and the CD-Key of MS-Office, Windows, and SQL Server installed on your computer. You can view this information for your current running operating system, or for another operating system/computer - by using command-line options. This utility can be useful if you lost the product key of your Windows/Office, and you want to reinstall it on your computer.

Thank you for that. It's a mixture of good and not so good news. It would appear that I had no problem. However, I suspect I have lost its usefulness as MBAM has got rid of it. Why would MBAM identify it as a PUP?

If it was installed on purpose, it can be added to MBAM's ignore list.
Malware often uses these along with Legit users. That is why they are detected as PUP.
