Power Options & Auto Updates

Hi: I have my XP set thusly: Turn off monitor after 10 minutes, Turn off Hard Disks after 10 minutes, System Standby after 10 minutes, Hibernate never. I have Auto Updates activitated to be done at 3 a.m. daily. Question: Am I getting updated automatically? I find a message every so often that updates are ready to be downloaded, which indicates to me that the automatic updates are not taking place. Thanks.

It is automatically advising you, probably by a yellow shield/flag in your bottom right-hand taskbar, that downloads are available. You still have to take note that this flag has appeared, click on it to accept the downloads and then let it run. You can continue to use your PC while you are doing this. If you let your cursor hover over the yellow shield during this time it will show you how far it has got as a percentgae of the download. Once it has completed the download of available updates you can click on the yellow shield again to install the updates. Follow through the instruction given to install and then it is highly likely you will need to reboot your PC for the updates to take affect, so make sure anything you have been working on is saved first.

 

Thanks for those quick and helpful replies. So, is there any way I can use a power-saving setting and still get updates automatically?

 

If you set the updates to occur earlier, such as 11pm before you go to bed and set your power saving to trigger after 1 hour of inactivity, it would then download the updates automatically if you leave your PC on when you go to bed, but then shut down an hour after you last used it. This would give it ample time to do the updates and then go in to a power saving mode. (Adjust times to suit your own schedule obviously).
