    Hi,

I have an old Compaq Presario 7480

I have been installing/ uninstalling win98 and Linux distros trying to get the machine right, general mucking about to see which distro will work. Sort of a hobby.

With all this uninstalling/ reinstalling, it's been getting a BIG work out, lots of hard offs and ons in a row.

Usually the computer hangs on "shutdown" and has to be finally switched off manually. Last time it shut down "automatically" BUT when I asked it to start up again, it wouldn't.

The CPU fan and fan in the power unit kicks for a moment then nothing, try again immediately and there is no response at all, but give it a moment or two and it kicks those fans again.

Initially I thought it was the power supply, but have plugged in a different power supply and get exactly the same response. Is this computer toast?

    Dins

It's possible a capacitive effect is causing your problem. Leave the PC plugged in but turned off for a couple of hours then re-try it.
