Power supply questions

Im looking to get a new power supply and need to know a few things:

1) Are there different sizes? The one I have at the moment looks really small compared to pictures i have seen online.
2) Im gonna get a geforce 6800 and plan to OC it so what is the minimum wattage that i should get? And will the amount of RAM i have affect my power usage?
3) Anyone know of sum good power supplies out there for not too much money? Preferably 400+ watts. Thx.

 

1) Yes there are different sizes. Get an ATX one, that's the type you need.
2) Minimum 350w.
3) Don't get a cheap PSU. It will break within a month or two. Get one for $30 or more.

P.S. FX5200 isn't as bad as you think it is.

 

5200, isn't all that great for gaming. Everything else, it works great!

On topic. What flavour of 6800 are we talking? Vanilla 6800, 6800 GS, GT, Ultra?

 

Just a normal 6800, cause im kinda price limited to around 200 but if i can find one, a 256 mb version. AGP kinda limits me as well. Ive also heard that eVGA is one of the better nvidia card manufacturers.

 

I have a 5200 on this comp and it doesn't play the new games very well but I got a new comp with bfg 6800gt oc and it works great.

 

you should aim for a branded psu around 450w for a 6800 and a 3.0 p4, which are quite power hungry

Antec are very good, as are ThemalTake and Zalman.

As far as Watts, around 500 would be good and allow plenty of headroom.

Never buy cheap no name power supplies, it's a recipe for trouble.

Everything relies on the PSU, so get the best quality one you can afford.
